Inspiration

We were inspired by the psychological phenomenon of reverse psychology and the irresistible urge to do exactly what we're told not to do. The idea came from classic "wet paint" signs - the more you tell someone not to touch something, the more they want to. We wanted to create a digital experiment that explores human nature, impulse control, and social dynamics in a fun, chaotic way.

What it does

DO NOT CLICK ME is a psychological chaos experiment disguised as a simple forbidden button. The app presents users with a prominent red button labeled "DO NOT CLICK ME" along with increasingly dramatic warnings. When users inevitably click it:

Immediate Chaos: Visual/audio mayhem with flashing colors, spinning GIFs, chaotic sounds, and moving UI elements

Permanent Consequences: Every click is permanently recorded and displayed on the "Wall of Shame" Escalating Difficulty: The button shrinks, moves around, and becomes harder to click with each press Social Gamification: Public leaderboards showing both "shamers" (clickers) and "winners" (resisters) Resistance Tracking: Users who resist clicking get tracked on the "Wall of Winners" based on how long they can withstand temptation The app features multiple chaos levels, floating logos, second-chance mechanics, and a complete social ranking system with funny titles and achievements.

How we built it

We built this as a Devvit app for Reddit using the experimental Bolt.new integration:

Frontend: React with TypeScript, featuring complex CSS animations, audio synthesis, and responsive design Backend: Node.js serverless functions with Redis for persistent data storage Devvit Integration: Native Reddit app that creates posts and handles user authentication Real-time Features: Mouse tracking, resistance timing, and dynamic UI positioning Visual Effects: Custom CSS animations, floating elements, chaos overlays, and responsive design The architecture uses Reddit's built-in authentication and Redis for data persistence, ensuring scalability and security.

Challenges we ran into

Audio Synthesis: Creating chaotic sound effects using Web Audio API without external libraries Performance Optimization: Managing multiple simultaneous animations and moving elements without lag Responsive Design: Ensuring the chaos works across all device sizes while maintaining visual impact Data Persistence: Implementing permanent click tracking that survives browser sessions Devvit Integration: Working within Reddit's sandboxed environment and API limitations Psychological Balance: Making the app addictive enough to be engaging but not genuinely harmful Accomplishments that we're proud of Viral Potential: Created something genuinely shareable and discussion-worthy Technical Innovation: Advanced CSS animations, audio synthesis, and real-time tracking User Experience: Seamless integration between chaos and functionality Social Features: Comprehensive leaderboard system with personality-driven titles Performance: Smooth animations and responsive design across all devices Reddit Integration: Successfully leveraged Devvit's unique capabilities for social engagement

What we learned

Human Psychology: People really can't resist clicking forbidden buttons (confirmed!) Devvit Platform: Deep understanding of Reddit's developer ecosystem and capabilities Performance Optimization: Balancing visual chaos with smooth user experience Social Dynamics: How leaderboards and public shame/pride drive engagement Audio Programming: Web Audio API for creating dynamic sound effects Responsive Chaos: Making complex animations work across all screen sizes

What's next for DO NOT CLICK ME

Enhanced Chaos Modes: More sophisticated visual effects and sound patterns Community Features: User-generated chaos content and custom button designs Achievement System: Unlock new chaos effects based on click patterns Viral Mechanics: Share buttons, challenge friends, and cross-subreddit competitions Analytics Dashboard: Detailed statistics on resistance patterns and click behaviors Mobile App: Native iOS/Android versions with haptic feedback and push notifications AI Integration: Personalized temptation strategies based on user behavior patterns The app demonstrates the perfect blend of psychology, technology, and social engagement - exactly what makes content go viral on Reddit! 🚨🎯πŸ”₯
