Inspiration

When I started this Design-a-thon, I was unsure of what to use for my idea. I was considering using ChatGPT to give me ideas, but then realized the irony in me wanting to come up with an idea on my own, yet wanting to come up with an idea fast. Then it struck me: Do I Need an AI for That?

How does your design address the prompt?

As generative and agentic AI experienced increased use in the general public, I noticed that college students tend to use AI for school extensively--perhaps too much. We aim to challenge college students to question their usage of AI and determine if they truly need to use AI every time they believe they need to. As AI becomes more prevalent and is taught to perform more advanced tasks, the danger lies in the inheritance of organic human innovation and creativity versus the solutions generated by AI.

What are your main design decisions and how do they contribute to your product?

• Our design is targeted toward college students who routinely use AI for school and experience some degree of overwhelm. It aims at reducing friction and cognitive overhead in getting started. To do this, the introductory module is sequential and consists of multiple choice questions to allow the user to describe their usage of AI to the app without being overwhelmed with having to come up with a detailed description.
• To provide immediate feedback to users regarding their usage of AI, the dashboard shows the number of times they used AI in the past year, month, or week, as well as a percentage-wise rate of change from the previous unit of time. There is also a graph that makes rates of change more visual. Beneath the chart is an enumeration of no more than three of the user's main goals regarding AI usage to guide them in their interpretation of the trends in their usage of AI. This way, they know if an increase/decrease in their usage is necessarily good or bad.

What's next for Do I Need an AI for That?

After this Design-a-thon concludes, we plan on implementing it as a real mobile app using either React Native or Kotlin.
