We were inspired in the face of the Pandemic to provide information and resources to people in need of them.
Currently, AidMap allows users to input their Zip Code (Currently only works for the state of California) and the site will show them a map of Food Banks and free WiFi locations near them.
We built this using JavaScript and the React Web Development framework, as well as some APIs, primarily MapBox.
One of out larges challenges was making the map display properly - documentation and tutorials on the MapBox site only show how to display MapBox standalone as if it were the entire site - making it appear within ours was a challenge. Additionally, we created the frontend of a User Submission feature where users could submit Food Bank/Wifi Locations for the map, but we did not have the time to develop the backend of this.
We learned much more about using JavaScript and the React Framework, as well as gained a deeper understanding of how to find and use APIs
What's next for AidMap: Implementing the User Submission feature and refining the site!
