𧬠DNA Triangulation Calculator
Inspiration
As a genealogist navigating multiple DNA testing platforms, I constantly faced the challenge of manually comparing chromosome segment data to confirm ancestral links. Most tools either required deep technical expertise or didnβt allow cross-platform triangulation. I wanted a solution that made complex DNA segment triangulation accessible, accurate, and intuitive β and one that respected user privacy.
What it does
DNA Triangulation Calculator processes chromosome segment data from multiple DNA testing platforms, detects triangulated matches, and suggests likely shared ancestors β even integrating GEDCOM family tree files. It supports:
𧬠Overlap-based triangulation detection π Relationship estimation via shared cM β Confidence scoring π³ GEDCOM family tree matching π§ Smart name deduplication and data fusion π Visual filters and export tools All processing happens in-memory β nothing is stored or sent to a backend.
How I built it
BOLT!! React + TypeScript for frontend logic and safety Vite for lightning-fast development Tailwind CSS for rapid styling Custom CSV Parser with intelligent header detection GEDCOM parser to build ancestry graphs in-memory Triangulation algorithm that groups overlapping segments and scores MRCA candidates based on cM, surname convergence, haplogroup consistency, and more No backend β everything runs client-side
Challenges I ran into
Unifying different CSV formats across DNA vendors Deduplicating messy name data while preserving useful metadata Designing an algorithm that scored both genetic overlap and genealogical fit (lifespan, location, surname) Integrating GEDCOM data meaningfully without overwhelming the interface Keeping everything private and performant β especially with large files
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
β Built a working triangulation engine from scratch β no libraries used β Real-time GEDCOM integration that works offline β Automatically deduplicates names across files and merges metadata β Visual chromosome browsing + annotation system β Fully client-side and privacy-focused
What I learned
How varied DNA segment data formats really are That combining genealogical logic with genetic evidence requires more than math β it requires inference, context, and fuzziness-- that means coding for that fuzziness GEDCOM files are incredibly rich, but hard to parse without structure Genealogical triangulation benefits from scoring systems that weigh evidence (not just detect overlaps)
What's next for DNA Triangulation Calculator
