Inspiration
Having played Dungeons & Dragons together for the past years, and wanting to face the challenge to build something silly, we wanted to combine our hobbies of roleplaying with our technical expertise.
What it does
With our Instagram-filter, you can proclaim that you are ready to go on your adventure as the class of your choice, to find other like-minded heroes near you! If your quest to find companions failed, you can still be the hero you know you are! A small proof-of-concept adventure, the Dungeon Master 2000 will lead you through the forests of Vinnermoore to slay the tyrannic dragon that plagues the village.
How we built it
The Instagram-filter is built using Facebook's SparkAR Studio. The Dungeon Master 2000 is built using the Raspberry Pi platform, utilising the SenseHat for graphics and the Python SpeechRecognition library as well as the Festival Text-To-Speech engine as an interface. Posterboard, acrylic paints, glue and moss optional.
Challenges we ran into
Setting up the NoVNC connection to the RPi for the use of the RPi GUI while running the SenseHat on the GPIO pins. Setting up Voice Recognition library in Python. Finding a working Text-To-Speech engine. Writing a story, appropriate for our classic fantasy game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The whole effing thing.
What we learned
Python, NoVNC, SparkAR...we pretty much started from zero here
What's next for DM 2000
Finding a better TTS-engine, implementing deeper characters (items, attributes), longer adventures with deeper immersion
