A calming music app that combines animated music boxes, ambient soundscapes, focus tools, and an interactive performance mode—built and refined with Codex.

Inspiration

Most music apps are built around playlists and streaming. Relaxation apps focus on ambient sounds. Piano apps focus on performance.

I wanted to combine these experiences into a single product that feels calm, interactive, and enjoyable to use every day.

The goal of DLing Music Box is not simply to play music—it is to create a relaxing space where beautiful animated music boxes, carefully selected melodies, ambient soundscapes, focus tools, and interactive performance all work together.

What it does

DLing Music Box is a cross-platform music experience available on iOS, Android, and the web.

The app features:

  • Animated music box themes
  • Curated music collections
  • Ambient soundscapes
  • A Focus Timer for productivity
  • An interactive Performance Mode with multiple instrument sounds
  • Recording and playback
  • Cloud accounts and subscriptions

Rather than switching between multiple apps, users can listen, relax, focus, and perform in one cohesive experience.

How we built it

This project was built with Codex as an active development partner throughout the engineering process.

Instead of only generating code, Codex helped with:

  • Designing and refining product features
  • Implementing and debugging cross-platform functionality
  • Investigating authentication and OAuth workflows
  • Resolving subscription and entitlement issues
  • Improving Android layouts across different screen sizes
  • Preparing production builds for both the App Store and Google Play
  • Reviewing release readiness through repeated audits and testing

The project combines modern web technologies with native mobile deployment, allowing the same product experience to reach users across multiple platforms.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was maintaining a consistent experience across iOS, Android, and the web.

Media-heavy animated assets, responsive layouts, authentication flows, subscription systems, and platform-specific behavior all required different solutions.

Codex significantly accelerated this iterative process by helping investigate issues, compare implementations, verify fixes, and continuously refine the product through rapid development cycles.

What's next

DLing Music Box will continue expanding with new animated themes, richer ambient experiences, additional interactive instruments, and ongoing cross-platform improvements.

The long-term goal is to build a relaxing digital space where listening, focusing, and playing music naturally come together.
