The pandemic has separated us all. While there are many pressing issues directly related to addressing the pandemic, we lost some of the smaller moments as well. As we were trying to listen to music as a group, we found very few options. The alternatives felt convoluted or complicated. So we decided to make a simple web app to fill that need without having to install any extra software or create any special accounts.

What it does

DJ Room allows people to synchronously listen to Spotify music with minimal setup. Listeners can create a room, or join another person's room. The person who creates the room becomes the DJ, and all the other people in the room can listen to and request music from the DJ. The web application is simple to use, requiring only a valid Spotify account to work.

How we built it

DJ Room was built using Javascript, Spotify, and Firebase. We used React.js to create the user interface and front-end portion of the application. The front-end accesses the music through Spotify's API, and the music stays in sync by connecting to a back-end database created with Express.js and Firebase by Google. The back-end database coordinates all of the playback information so that everyone can listen to the same music at the same time.
