Inspiration

Django is one of the most powerful web frameworks, but developers often face tedious daily routines: hidden N+1 query performance drops, complex database migrations that break production, scattered logs, and the lack of a specialized development environment. Existing IDEs (like PyCharm or VS Code) treat Django code as regular Python text without deep contextual awareness of ORM relationships and framework architecture. We built DjangoNAUT to bridge this gap.

What it does

DjangoNAUT is a specialized desktop IDE and Control Center built on Electron, designed exclusively for Django developers. It provides:

  • Live SQL Telemetry & N+1 Auto-Fix: Real-time query tracking with instant detection of N+1 bottlenecks and a one-click button to inject select_related() / prefetch_related() directly into your code.
  • 35+ Project Inspectors: Visual exploration of URLs, ORM models, DB structures, templates, forms, ASGI routing, settings, middleware, i18n catalogs, Admin configurations, and DRF routers.
  • Migration Guard: Visual migration graphs, conflict resolution, and model drift checking.
  • Enterprise Audit & CLI: Comprehensive health scores, technical debt estimation, and a standalone djangonaut audit CLI tool with a GitHub Action for CI/CD pipelines.

How we built it

  • Core Desktop Environment: Built using Electron 41, Monaco Editor 0.52, and xterm.js with a native PTY terminal server (node-pty).
  • Python Agent (django_naut): A custom pip package that hooks into Django’s lifecycle (INSTALLED_APPS and custom middleware) to stream runtime SQL telemetry and error logs over local loopback sockets (127.0.0.1).
  • Static Analysis Core: JavaScript-based parsers and inspectors that handle AST-like structure scanning and security checks.

Challenges we ran into

  • Establishing secure, low-latency communication between the Electron frontend, the Node.js terminal/telemetry servers, and the running Python/Django process without risking security.
  • Implementing robust static analysis and automated code modifications (like injecting ORM optimization methods into multi-line views safely).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Created a fully functioning, production-ready desktop IDE from scratch in a very short timeframe.
  • Passing a comprehensive test suite (66/66 unit & integration tests passing).
  • Delivering a seamless developer experience that functions completely offline while keeping all runtime telemetry strictly local (127.0.0.1).

What we learned

  • Deep architectural patterns of Django's ORM execution lifecycle and middleware hooks.
  • Advanced Electron process isolation and secure inter-process communication (contextBridge).
  • How to design developer tooling (DevEx) that minimizes switching friction for developers moving from VS Code.

What's next for DjangoNAUT

  • Expanding the AI architect capabilities powered by Groq.
  • Introducing a time-travel debugger for Django views.
  • Community feedback integration and polishing cross-platform releases (Windows, macOS, Linux).
