DJ Turn - 눈에 콩깍지가 씌다

Inspiration

We were inspired by the Korean folktale The Snail Bride, a story of transformation and desire. At its heart is the traditional idiom “bean pod eyes” (눈에 콩깍지가 씌다), which literally means “a bean pod covering the eyes.” It describes being blinded by love or desire — seeing only what you want to see while ignoring flaws or reality. This metaphor became the foundation of our reinterpretation, showing how enchantment and longing can distort perception and cloud truth.

What it does

The project reimagines the folktale through rhythm, visuals, and symbolism. It blurs myth and reality, showing how desire can blind even authority figures, and how truth flickers beneath layers of illusion.

How we built it

We used AI tools like OpenArt AI and Runway AI, combined with manual frame drawing, tracing, and correction. Each frame was carefully refined to maintain consistency across scenes. Rhythmic editing and modular prompts shaped the surreal flow of imagery, while symbolic layering ensured the cultural metaphors carried through without losing depth.

Challenges we ran into

The most difficult challenge was tracing and refining frames while keeping scenes visually consistent. Each frame had to balance fidelity to the folktale with the surreal rhythm of the animation. Maintaining continuity across lighting, motifs, and character transformations demanded precision and patience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We fused folklore with modern visual language, creating sequences where rhythm and symbolism drive the story. The transformation of the snail into a woman, and the magistrate’s blinded gaze, became a striking metaphor that resonated beyond the folktale.

What we learned

We learned how to reinterpret traditional stories without flattening their cultural meaning, and how to use AI tools in a modular, controlled way. The process taught us to balance experimentation with respect for tradition, while discovering new methods to enforce consistency across traced frames and scenes.

What's next

We will continue to create music videos inspired by compelling stories and ideas. Each new project will explore how rhythm, visuals, and symbolism can reinterpret narratives in fresh, surprising ways, expanding beyond folklore into broader cultural and imaginative themes.
