🛠️ Inspiration: A Lifetime of DIY For as long as I can remember, I’ve been immersed in the world of DIY. Over the years, I tackled hundreds of hands-on projects — building, fixing, experimenting — and I loved every minute of it. But there was always one part of the process that slowed me down:
Research. Planning. Organizing.
Each build meant hours of digging through forums, watching videos, sketching steps, and compiling tools and material lists. I always thought: “There has to be a smarter way to plan and build.”
That idea became the seed of DIYgenius.
What it does
DIYgenius builds custom DIY project plans tailored to you — complete with step-by-step instructions, tools & materials lists & saftey guidence
Smart. Visual. Beginner-friendly.
Whether you're fixing, creating, or learning — DIYgenius makes it simple. Just tell it what you want to build. It handles the rest.
How I built it
The Shift: From Builder to Creator I’ve always wanted to build digital products — tools that help others, like the kind I wished I had when I was deep in a DIY rabbit hole. But traditional coding wasn’t for me.
I’m a creator, a visual thinker, a problem-solver. Not someone who thrives in terminal windows or complex backends.
Then I discovered Vibe Coding — a creative-first approach to building software. It bridged that gap for me. Suddenly, I could apply my real-world maker experience to digital design and development in a way that made sense.
With the rise of AI tools, the timing felt perfect to finally bring DIYgenius to life.
I built all of the Frontend with Bolt and most of the backend too, connecting Github for branches and working with other AI agents to work through errors. I learned how to integration OpenAI, Supabase and Stripe Payments and how to navigate some challenges issue.
Challenges I ran into
The Challenge: From Vision to Reality Building DIYgenius wasn’t smooth sailing.
At first, things clicked — Supabase, Stripe, and AI-powered generation worked harmoniously. I was generating custom DIY plans on demand:
Tailored project scopes Tool and material lists Step-by-step visual instructions But then… disaster struck.
The AI rewrote my Supabase Edge Functions. Suddenly, everything broke — checkout flows, auth logic, and my entire backend structure. I lost days of work, untangled corrupted logic, and had to rebuild critical functionality from scratch.
It was one of the hardest moments in my journey. But it also taught me something vital:
Building is never linear. Whether with wood or code, it’s always test, fail, refine, and rebuild.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The Final Product: DIYgenius Today, DIYgenius.org is live — a smart, beginner-friendly DIY planning assistant that reflects everything I’ve learned.
It empowers users of any skill level to:
Get custom project plans Instantly generate tools & materials lists Follow clear step-by-step instructions Save time and feel confident starting any DIY build
And I am so proud I can release it on time.
What I learned
Save your SUPABASE That Supabase Edge Function are a critical element and must be backed up, refined and stored. Branching and testing is a must. Oh and testing is the hardest part of the build for me...
What's next for DIYgenius
Version 1.0 is just the beginning I plan to incorporate additional functionality, and grow the app into a product that will utilise and connect to business partners (tool merchants, traders etc) making DIYgenius a goto app for future DIYers.
DIYgenius isn’t just a tool — it’s the companion I always wished I had when I was starting out. My mission is simple:
Make DIY easier, faster, and more enjoyable — for everyone.
