Inspiration

Desinfektionsmittel und Handschuhe werden rar und sind voranging in der Medizin gebraucht. Gleichzeitig wird allerorts darauf hingewiesen, dass das einfachste Mittel zur Verhinderung der Virenübertragung ausgiebiges Händewaschen ist. - Doch wie wäscht man sich unterwegs die Hände? Wir möchten eine einfache Möglichkeit entwickeln mobile Waschbecken selbst zu bauen. Um Menschen die Möglichkeit zu geben direkt vor dem Besuch des Supermarktes, der Apotheke oder anderen Orten, an denen sie direkten und indirekten Kontakt zu anderen Menschen haben, ihre Hände zu waschen. Dabei soll der Fokus auf einfacher Umsetzung, Kosteneffizienz (wir können ein Waschbeckensystem für nur 100€ realisieren!) und möglichst kontaktloser Nutzung liegen.

Unser Projekt

Im Laufe des Hackathons haben wir die Idee Mobile Handwaschstationen recherchiert und ausgebaut. Durch Korrespondenz mit Supermärkten, Apotheken, Experten und Privatpersonen haben wir sichergestellt, dass unsere Idee Anklang findet und umgesetzt werden möchte. Dann war die Frage, wie wir unser Projekt umsetzten möchten. Weitere Nachforschungen und Kontakte zu den offenen Werkstätten haben uns darin bekräftigt eine Anleitung zum eigenen Erbauen von mobilen Waschbecken zu entwickeln. Besonders wichtig war es uns eine leichte Umsetzung mit den Notwendigkeiten zur Reduktion der Virenlast zu verbinden. Das einfaches Konzept, das von Menschen mit unterschiedlichen handwerklichen Fähigkeiten umgesetzt werden kann, kommt mit Einkaufsliste und Schritt für Schritt Erklärungen.

Besondere Herausforderungen

Unsere erste Herausforderung war die Präzisierung unseres Vorhabens. Wen wollen wir ansprechen? In welcher Größenordung arbeiten wir? Wo fangen wir an? Diese Fragen haben sich durch intensive Recherche und der Erweiterung unseres Teams geklärt. - ** Wir möchten etwas entwickeln, das für wenig Geld von jedem gebaut und genutzt werden kann. Wir möchten unsere Ergebnisse frei zugänglich machen, möglichst weit verbreiten und eine Niesche abdecken, für die es noch kein Lösungsmodell gibt. **

Gerade im Umgang mit diesem Hackathon war es eine Aufgabe, die Informationsflut und angebotene Hilfe zielführend zu nutzen. Nachdem wir unser Projekt klar definiert hatten, konnten wir besser nach hilfreichen Expert:innen und Mentor:innen suchen.

Die vermutlich größte Hürde, war das Zeitlimit. 48 Stunden, an einem Wochenende, für die Entwicklung und Durchführung eines Projektes sind knapp bemessen. Auch hier hat es sich bewährt, das Ziel im Auge zu behalten, Aufgaben klar zu verteilen und als Team an einem Strang zu ziehen.

Darauf sind wir stolz

Wir sind stolz auf alles was wir in der kurzen Zeit erreicht haben. Besonders aber hat uns die Menge an Zuspruch für unser Projekt innerhalb der Hackathon-Gemeinde und in der Öffentlichkeit bewegt. Bei jedem Telefonat und jeder Email haben wir mehr Menschen kennen gelernt, die uns unterstüzt, neue Ideen eingebracht und in unserer Arbeit bekräftigt haben.

Die Tatsache, dass wir es geschafft haben das Projekt von einer reinen Idee zur Zusammenstellung einer Anleitung für die Handwaschstation, Knüpfung von ersten Kontakten mit Pilotprojekt-Partner:innen und der Verfassung von Konkreten Plänen für die nächsten Tage und Wochen zu entwickeln, ist eine enorme Leistung.

Was wir gelernt haben

Man muss nicht alles selber bauen und an den Strom anschließen, manchmal reicht es auch etwas zu "hacken". Stichwort: Benzinpumpen für Flüssigseife!

Die einfachste Lösung ist meist nicht die hübscheste aber definitiv ein guter Anfang. Man lässt sich gerne dazu verleiten das perfekte Produkt anstatt das grundlegendste zu entwerfen. Da hilft es sich im Team wieder auf das eigentliche Ziel zu fokussieren.

Das steht bei uns als nächstes an

Als nächstes wollen wir unser Konzept ausbauen und einen ersten Prototyp entwickeln. In 10 Tagen wollen wir in Deutschland 5 mobile Waschbecken gebaut haben und über ein Pat:innen-Programm an verschiedenen Standorten aufgestellt haben. Mittels eines Webinars in Kooperation mit den Offenen Werkstätten, möchten wir Bastelbegeisterte live anleiten ihre eigenen Handwaschstationen zu bauen. Unser Ziel ist es innerhalb der nächsten 20 Tage europaweit Handwaschbecken zu produzieren und aufzustellen.

Inspiration

Desinfectant and gloves are a rare commodity in times of CoVid-19 and are of high importance in the medical field. At the same time we are reminded by everyone that the easiest way to stop the spread of the virus is proper hand washing. - But how can you wash your hands when you are out and about? ** We want to develop a mobile handwashing station you can build yourself.** Once installed it allows people to wash their hands before necessary visits to the supermarket, pharmacy and wherever one comes in direct or indirect contact to other people. Our focus is on a simple and cost effective (our whole system can be realized with just 100€!) design that requires as minimum contact.

Our Project

During the hackathon we researched and improved the idea mobile handwashing station further. Through correspondance with supermarkets, pharmacies and private stakeholders we confirmed that our concept is relevant and necessary. Next, we had to decide how to approach the problem. Further research and new formed contacts to the organization _ open workshops _ underlined our plan to develop a DIY manual for the stations. It was important to us to combine a simple design with an effective way to contain the virus. This easy concept can be used by people of all degrees of craftiness and comes with a shopping list and step by step instructions.

Challenges we ran into

Our first challange was the precise formulation of our project. Who do we want to contact? On what scale do we want to work? Where do we even start? These questions could only be answered by extensive research and extending our team. -** We want to develop a product that can be build and used by anyone, while keeping the costs small. We want to freely publish our project, let it reach as many people as possible and cover an existing gap in our current system.**

A major task, especially in the context of this hackathon , was filtering and making proper use of the amount of incoming information and help. After clearly defining our project, it was much easier to find experts and mentors that could help us.

But probably our biggest challange was the time limit. 48 hours, on a weekend, to plan and execute a project leaves little time for errors. Our proven strategy was to focus on the goal and work independently in a strong team.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

We can be proud of everything we accomplished in the short time.

We were just overwhelmed by the positive feedback to our project by other hackathon participants and the public. Every phone call and email made us meet more people that supported our project, were a source of inspiration and information and let us know the work we did was worthwile.

Lastly, the fact that we developed the project from a mere idea to finished a fully formed building guide for a handwashing station is an impressive achievement. We are now in contact with partners to run a pilot trial of building and setting up the stations and formed plans to continue our project over the next days and weeks.

What we learned

Not everything has to be developed from scratch and connected to power, sometimes it is worth 'hacking' something. See: Gas pumps for liquid soap!

The simplest solution is usually not the prettiest but a good starting point. It is easy to digress to develop the perfect product instead of a minimal viable one. Having a great team that shifts the focus back to the original goal helps a lot.

What's next for DIY: Mobile Waschbecken

Our next steps are improving our concept and building the first prototype. In the next 10 days 5 mobile sinks will be build and distributed through a sponsorship program in Germany. We want to spread our message through a webinar in colaboration with Open Workshops where we guide crafty people through the process of building their own handwashing stations in real time. Our goal is to produce and operate mobile handwashing stations across Europe within the next 20 days.
