Inspiration
At first we focused on a specific group facing discrimination in the workplace and ran into the topic of anonymity throughout the process like anonymous chats for interviews... Taking a risk, we wanted to expand our target group, and we thought that our solution for diversity should be inclusive of all. Since the COVID-19 pandemic tech companies are moving towards having their employees work remotely permanently. And we thought, why not make the entire process of working anonymous; with the rise of metaverse and with the help of blockchain identity management we believe that the workplace could be made completely anonymous while still having credibility and team forming and reduced discrimination. We do not think we have to know a person's appearance to form connections, and this can be observed in gaming platforms as well. The employees will decide their avatar, and work comfortably without experiencing prejudice due to sex, age, race...
What it does
We focused more on the project planning aspect of this broad idea of total anonymity in the workplace: an app for having a scrum methodology thinking it was more aligned with Wemanity's projects. Employees will have tasks they sign up for but we have an additional twist: gamification. We decided to have scores for tasks where employees can level up. These levels can be used for bonuses, promotions and prizes also boosting motivation of employees (which can be reduced while working from home).
How we built it
We started with making a database so we could store all the data. After that, we started making the app using java and Swing. We specificly build the view for the employee and for the manager and a taskmenu. We also made a VR meetingroom using Union as a preview of how things can look in a digital workspace.
Challenges we ran into
The first challenge we ran into, was the brainstorm that we did multiple times. We had a lot of ideas that we wanted to work out and sometimes we got carried away and forgot our initial problem/goal. Another challenge the developpers ran into was the fact that they don't have a lot of experience with Swing. So a lot of time is spent doing research and trying to get the code to work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our idea and we believe it was a unique and futuristic solution to this problem. We wouldn't believe that working remotely would be the 'normal' for tech companies before the pandemic but it changed very quickly. We think that when metaverse becomes more commonly used in the very near future, moving to full anonymity would be the new 'normal'. We are also happy that we were able to focus on a detailed part of this broad solution and have a project planning scrum app with the ability of VR meeting rooms.
What we learned
We learned how to brainstorm and discuss our ideas in group. The programmers also learned how to use Swing and noticed their lack of knowledge. The business team learned how to work with union without any prior knowledge.
What's next for diVRse
We attempted to make a prototype for the meeting room on Unity, the future of unity could include having a VR meeting rooms. Moreover using AI to suggest tasks to individual based on their performances on prior tasks and make suggestions on how to maximize their scores eventually increasing time management of individuals. Through machine learning, we could train non human employees.
