Inspiration

Most Human Design and astrology apps fall into one of two camps. Some drop your sun sign into a template and call it a reading. Others draw an accurate chart and leave you alone with a wall of symbols.

We wanted the thing in between: an app that does the real math, then explains what it found in language a person would actually use. We also wanted it to feel like an object instead of a dashboard, closer to an old star atlas on parchment, with brass, gold, and classical figures, so opening your own chart feels a little ceremonial.

People who love Human Design usually love astrology too, but most apps treat them as separate worlds. DIVINE reads them together.

What it does

You enter your name, birth date, birth time, and birthplace. DIVINE computes your Human Design bodygraph and your natal chart, then walks you through a guided reveal: your Big Three, your archetype, your calling card, and a first look at your chart and bodygraph.

  • Two systems, read together. Your bodygraph sits next to your natal wheel, with Placidus and Whole Sign houses side by side, and the readings reference both.
  • Five layers for every placement: meaning, how it shows up, the soul work, the gift, and the celestial data underneath.
  • An original archetype framework: Clarion, Cultivator, Alchemist, Oracle, or Sentinel, each with its own illustration.
  • A daily reading from your own chart, Ask (an assistant that already knows your chart), and a reading library on purpose, money, relationships, family, grief, and wellness.
  • Seasonal skies: collectible visual themes for your bodygraph and natal wheel.

The tone is reflective, not predictive. DIVINE describes the design you were born with. It does not forecast your day.

How we built it

Native Swift and SwiftUI. Most of our time went into how it looks and moves.

A visual system built like a star atlas.

  • Parchment, ink, and brass. Light mode sits on a parchment texture with deep ink text (#3B3115), brass accents (#8A7652), and an oxblood call to action (#521010). Dark mode trades the parchment for near-black under a watercolor wash for the current sun sign, so the background turns with the season.
  • Four bundled typefaces, each with one job. Berfal for display titles, Editor's Note for reading text, Selino for small-caps labels, and Intenso Script for personal lead-ins like "Ava, you're an...". Berfal's swash capitals overhang their own bounds, so we render display text through Core Graphics into an image with generous margins. The swashes never clip.
  • A wheel that changes with the real sky. In each sun sign's season, the natal wheel re-skins in that sign's element: gold for fire, limestone for earth, silver for air, pearl for water. That takes 48 zodiac illustrations (12 signs in four materials) plus a medallion per sign. On your birthday the wheel turns gold; on full moons, eclipses, equinoxes, and your Saturn return, it turns copper.

Every reveal is choreographed.

  • Calculating. The app reads the sky, then maps your design. A stargazer figure crossfades at the halfway mark, a gold glow pulses behind it, shooting stars cross the screen, and a small star rides the edge of the progress bar. Real readings are prepared in parallel, so the wait is doing work.
  • Big Three. Your sun lands with a gold particle burst and a light haptic tap, then moon and rising follow half a second apart. No birth time? Rising shows a "?" instead of guessing.
  • Archetype. The illustration arrives with a 35-particle gold burst and a firmer haptic, and the name gets a slow golden shimmer, a cream-to-gold band of light swept across the letters with an additive blend.
  • Chart reveal. Your natal wheel rotates in from minus 45 degrees and settles, then your bodygraph fades in as the second beat.
  • Welcome Home. The last onboarding screen shows no new data on purpose: a sunrise that breathes with a slow glow, and your name in script.
  • Ambient life. Home draws faint constellations in a SwiftUI Canvas that fade in and out on a sine curve, over drifting stars and gold dust.

Details that hold up close. The bodygraph is drawn from SVG, themed per sky, and every gate and channel is tappable. Your calling card is a 3:5 card rendered at 3x and saved to Photos. The color tokens were audited against WCAG AA: the brass accent failed as text on parchment (3.77:1), so we added a deeper text variant (5.38:1) and kept the original for fills. A Readable Fonts setting swaps the script face for Selino.

Under the surface. Both calculation engines run on device: astrology on the Swiss Ephemeris, plus our own Human Design engine for gates, channels, centers, type, authority, profile, and incarnation cross. The backend is TypeScript (Hono on Node) with Supabase, and long-form readings and Ask are generated with Anthropic's Claude, grounded in the computed chart.

Monetization runs on RevenueCat. The paywall is our own SwiftUI design driven by RevenueCat Offerings: a brass-framed Founder card on parchment carrying the user's own sun-sign sigil. The Founder tier is capped at 555 members with a live "X out of 555 spots remain" counter. A RevenueCat webhook writes every Founder purchase, renewal, and expiration to Supabase, the app reads the count from our API (cached 24 hours so the paywall renders instantly), and at zero the Founder card retires itself and Yearly inherits the brass hero treatment. Ask packs (10, 30, or 100 questions that never expire) and individual readings also run through RevenueCat, with ownership verified on the server and revoked on refund.

Challenges we ran into

  • Swash capitals that clip. Berfal is the heart of the brand, and standard text layout cut off its swashes. Rendering display text as an image with margins fixed it everywhere at once.
  • Seasonal art at print resolution. The wheel textures are 3712 by 4608 print masters for printable charts. On screen we load display-sized copies so scrolling stays smooth.
  • Keeping purchases attached to the right person. RevenueCat's anonymous ID meant a reinstall could create a new customer. We switched to our own stable app user ID in iCloud Keychain, which survives reinstalls and carries across devices.
  • Explaining without flattening. Keeping the depth while cutting the jargon, for every placement, gate, center, and profile.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • DIVINE is live on the App Store, with all three subscriptions approved and free trials running in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • The whole app reads as one object, from the first reveal to the paywall.
  • Every placement opens into a five-layer explanation, so nothing on the chart is a dead end.

What we learned

Motion works when it carries meaning. Staggered reveals give people a moment to take in each piece of their chart before the next arrives, and a final screen with nothing new on it lets the whole reveal land. RevenueCat's Offerings, entitlements, and webhooks gave us one source of truth for who has what, so the Founder counter and server-side ownership stayed small features.

What's next for DIVINE

  • The Founder's Sky. When all 555 Founder spots are claimed, every Founder receives an exclusive sky theme.
  • More readings, starting with the "coming soon" titles people are already asking about.
  • Notifications for new readings and daily insights.

Why DIVINE fits the Design Award

DIVINE treats a birth chart as a crafted object: a parchment and brass visual system, four typefaces with distinct jobs, and a natal wheel that re-skins itself in gold, limestone, silver, or pearl as the real sun moves through the zodiac. Each reveal is choreographed with staggered timing, particle bursts, and haptics that land the moment your sun or archetype appears. The care goes below the surface, to swash capitals that never clip, color tokens audited against WCAG AA, and print-resolution art for printable charts. Even the paywall is drawn in the same brass and parchment, with your own sun-sign sigil on the Founder card.
