Divine Anomaly – Eastern Village Arc
Inspiration
This story draws inspiration from Japan’s deep spiritual heritage and its rich tradition of yokai (spirit beings).
The central concept — a harmonious village where humans and spirits coexist — is rooted in ancient myths and nature worship.
The theme of prayer as a bridge between worlds, along with the visual beauty of the four seasons and folklore, served as the core of the creative vision.
What it does
This is a poetic short film made entirely using Vidu, an AI-powered video generation tool.
It follows Kaya, a shrine maiden wearing a fox mask, as she embarks on a journey from her village destroyed by a mysterious entity.
She encounters the Three Great Spirits (yokai), and her steps toward the world’s rebirth are portrayed through cinematic and emotional visuals.
How we built it
- Vidu was used for the full animation and scene transitions, allowing one-tool completion.
- MidJourney generated static images of characters and backgrounds used as base input for Vidu.
- Gemini was used for scriptwriting, narration development, and shot breakdown planning.
- The overall structure was designed based on the three-act structure and Hero's Journey model.
Great care was taken in directing each cut — adjusting camera angles, depth of field, lighting, and texture — to achieve a photorealistic and lyrical visual tone.
Challenges we ran into
- Maintaining a consistent cinematic tone across all scenes using Vidu alone was demanding.
- Balancing the mystical nature of yokai with visual realism required careful prompt engineering.
- Structuring the narration to express both worldbuilding and emotion within a short runtime.
- Addressing limitations in the AI model’s accuracy for cultural motifs like traditional Japanese garments and mythic elements.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Delivered a coherent cinematic short over 60 seconds in length, fully AI-generated.
- Received emotional reactions from viewers such as “This made me cry” or “It reminded me of forgotten spirits.”
- Helped establish the world of Divine Anomaly, generating fan comments about past characters on TikTok.
- Achieved high visual fidelity while embedding cultural and spiritual resonance in the narrative.
What we learned
- When using a single tool like Vidu, pre-visualization and image preparation are critical.
- Storytelling impact depends more on narrative intention and composition than technical sophistication.
- Themes like prayer, nostalgia, and fragile beauty can resonate deeply — even in AI short films — if the emotional structure is carefully crafted.
What's next for Divine Anomaly – Eastern Village Arc
This film serves as the prologue to the larger Divine Anomaly Universe, with future arcs including:
- Western Forest Arc: A story of rebirth between the spirit of death and a lonely boy.
- Northern Capital Arc: A city of steam and bones where mechanical knights and a skeletal bride fight for the soul of humanity.
- God and Machine Arc: A philosophical confrontation between AI-controlled divine consciousness and humans seeking to reclaim “prayer.”
These chapters will continue evolving through AI film contests and international creative collaborations.
