Inspiration
We were inspired by the lack of focus that people can experience from spending too much time on their devices. Getting back on track can be hard, so we wanted to create something that can motivate others, as well as ourselves, to break the bad habit of getting caught up with our devices when we’re busy.
What it does
Our Chrome extension helps users regain their focus. By using this extension on the device of their choice, users will receive pop-ups at random times and intervals with unsettling images and messages designed to get them off their devices. There are two modes: Mild Mischief and Toll of Dalmation. Mild Mischief provides less scary pop-ups that remind users to get back on track, while Toll of Dalmation are for users who wants a scare to get back on track fast.
How we built it
We used CSS, HTML, and JavaScript to create the Chrome extension using Visual Studio Code.
Challenges we ran into
We are four designers who wanted to see how far our code would take us without a developer! We got further than we expected.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We all feel proud of building this project in one night! We’d never built a Chrome extension before. It was a fun and interesting process.
What we learned
We learned how to build and structure a Chrome extension.
What's next for Distraction Demon
We hope to include audio in this project and allow users to blacklist and/or whitelist websites. Therefore, they can be selective about the websites they want to visit or avoid. It was also help them focus better when they need to work on a device without getting distracted.
