Inspiration

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of COVID cases was always dependant on the community, so we wanted to build an app to infer people of the dangers that they may impose on their community if they aren't following the health protocols in place.

What it does

Our program asks questions relating to COVID-19 to the user. There will be 2 pages where the user will be sent depending on their answers. The first page is the "WARNING" page where the program detects the user might have symptoms of COVID-19 from the questions. It will then ask the user to choose the city they live in the GTA and will mark the city they are in. The second page is the "END" page where the user is told that they are good to go and reminds the user to follow the protocols for COVID-19.

How we built it

The UI infrastructure is mainly formatted by Figma editor. Using Android-studio, we were able to transfer this front-end design into XML code. We used built-in activities through android-studio such as the maps, navigation, and also XML tools such as the page scroll and spinner. The back-end is completely coded through java, allowing us to manipulate data that is necessary for all activities, whether it is to navigate or to insert city-data.

Challenges we ran into

Time constraints, the tedious implication of Figma transfer, inability to add echoAR object

Design - The only challenge was the overwhelming amount of boxes of texts, pictures and shapes. I had to constantly lock and unlock boxes so I could make design changes. It was small at first but then the number of things added was starting to get long even when it was labelled.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

When we started practicing for this hackathon, originally we wanted to use HTML. However we soon discovered that Figma would work best with the limited time constraint as it can effectively enhance the UI, and in less than 2 days we were able to make an app front-end design using Figma, XML and our inputting of java knowledge through the android studio. In addition, we had taught ourselves XML over the course of those 2 days as well. The amount of dedication we had to finish this project, with the new material we needed to learn was something we as a group are proud of.

What we learned

Making an app was a completely new experience for us, as we originally were used to making websites with HTML. But during the course of those 2 days for the hackathon, we were able to learn many things about Figma, XML and android studio, something that was foreign to us at the beginning of the competition. Overall this hackathon has given us a great learning experience in using those Softwares.

What's next for Distant at this Instant

Our intention is to add echoAR to the Google Map activity.
