Inspiration
Seeing people with dyslexia struggle to read, something that most of us take for granted, inspired us to build a tool that would make reading more inclusive and accessible.
What it does
Takes text with larger and more complicated words and converts them into smaller and more readable words. It then takes the final simplified text and converts that into an audio file for the user to listen to.
How we built it
We used the Datamuse API in order to find synonyms for complex words in a sentence. Then, we integrated the gTTS (Google-Text-to-Speech) library in order to generate an audio version of the simplified sentence.
Challenges we ran into
We found it difficult to firstly find a good API to use which was essential to our project. We also had trouble geting the initial and final sentences to have the same meaning
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I think that we have created a program that is a good start to the problem that we sought out to fix. I think that the amount we did in the time given was pretty good.
What we learned
We learned how to work with external APIs, integrate text-to-speech, etc. Additionally, we learned about the importance of designing accessible technology along with a better understanding of the needs of those with Dyslexia.
What's next for DyslexiCare
We think that the next step for DyslexiCare is to research the preferred text formatting and audio settings for people with dyslexia and cater our program towards their needs
