Inspiration

Inspired by fast-paced restaurant simulation games like Diner Duo and Penguin Diner, Dish Dash takes the chaos and excitement of managing a restaurant into a virtual reality setting with a twist.

What it Does

Dish Dash features a quirky, balancing plate mechanic that makes balancing plates a challenge in VR, adding an extra VR-specific layer of difficulty as players manage orders and keep the kitchen running smoothly. Players must juggle tasks such as assigning tables, taking orders, delivering food, and cleaning empty plates, without dropping them of course. The game offers an engaging and intense experience, providing a mix of time-management, strategy, and multitasking in a VR environment.

How We Built It

We developed Dish Dash using the Unity game engine, leveraging its robust VR tools to create an immersive restaurant experience. We used ShapesXR as the prototyping tool. We used GitHub for collaboration. Devpost thumbnail is AI generated by DeepAI. The game’s mechanics and physics were fine-tuned to provide a fun yet challenging gameplay loop that tests the player’s multitasking abilities.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the main challenges we encountered during development was dealing with GitHub merging issues, which caused some delays in our workflow. Additionally, fine-tuning the VR mechanics for balancing plates and managing the fast-paced environment presented some hurdles that required creative problem-solving.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

We’re incredibly proud of how quickly we were able to develop a functional prototype within just a few weeks. Despite the challenges, we created an immersive VR experience that offers unique gameplay by combining restaurant management and balancing mechanics in a virtual environment.

What We Learned

Through the development of Dish Dash, we gained valuable experience in VR game design, learning how to craft engaging and interactive environments that put the player in control of a chaotic but fun experience. We also learned how to implement smooth game mechanics that balance complexity and fun.

What’s Next for Dish Dash

While Dish Dash is still in its prototype phase, the next steps would be to polish the gameplay mechanics, balance the game better, and expand the game’s features for an even more dynamic and engaging experience.

Dev Update: Revamped Coins, NPC Sound Fixes, and UI Overhaul

1. Coins System Revamp

We’ve revamped the coin system to make earning rewards more interactive:

Coins now automatically increase, similar to points, when customers finish their food. After a customer finishes their meal, coins will spawn. Players must pick them up with the controller to collect them.

2. NPC Sound Bug Fixes

Sound issues with NPCs have been resolved to ensure smoother and more consistent audio interactions.

3. UI Revamp

The UI has undergone a complete overhaul:

It’s been moved from being fixed on the screen to the player’s left hand for easier access and immersion. Players can now hide the UI using the side button on the controller for a more seamless experience.

Looking Ahead

We’re committed to continuing improvements and bringing fresh features to enhance the game experience. Here’s what we’re focusing on next:

Gameplay Enhancements: Additional interactive elements to make tasks more engaging. Performance Optimizations: Ensuring smooth gameplay with consistent performance across devices. New Features: Expanding existing systems like customer interactions and rewards for a richer experience. Stay tuned for more exciting updates, and thank you for your support!

Dev Update: Sound Integration & Bug Fixes

Sound Integration: Background Music & Spatial Audio SFX In this update, we’ve implemented sound effects and background music to enhance the gameplay experience. Here's a breakdown of the new sound features:

# 1. Background Music We’ve added dynamic background music that plays during gameplay. The music can be looped, and its volume is adjustable to create a smooth, immersive experience. Players can now hear a relaxing tune in the background as they progress through the game.

Features:

  • Music is looped for continuous play.
  • Volume levels can be adjusted.
  • Easy to add more tracks in the future.

#2. Spatial Audio for Sound Effects Sound effects in the game now utilize 3D spatial audio, ensuring that players can hear sounds in relation to their position in the world. This includes NPC sounds, food interactions, and more.

Key Features:

  • Non-looping sounds: For short effects like interactions or explosions, the sound is played at specific locations and fades based on distance.
  • Looped SFX: For ambient sounds or continuous actions, the sound loops and respects 3D positioning.
  • Distance-based volume control: Sounds fade in and out depending on the player’s proximity. This addition creates a more immersive environment, allowing players to experience the game world through sound in a way that reflects the dynamic 3D space.

Bug Fixes

  1. Food Rotation Fix One of the major bugs we encountered was the food’s rotation, which was misbehaving when the player picked up or interacted with plates. The rotation was inconsistent, leading to odd visual glitches when food was moved around.

Fix: We’ve updated the rotation logic to properly align the food objects when they are placed, picked up, or moved. This ensures that food will always face the correct direction, improving the player’s experience.

  1. Food Spawning Fix Another issue we faced was with the spawning of food. Sometimes, food would spawn in unexpected locations or in incorrect states, making it difficult for players to interact with or deliver the food.

Fix: We’ve revamped the spawning system, ensuring that food is now placed in designated areas and is ready for interaction. We also added more consistency in spawning behavior, so food now appears in the correct spot, every time.

Looking Ahead

With these updates, the game is becoming more polished and immersive. The addition of sound significantly improves the overall experience, while the bug fixes provide smoother gameplay. We’ll continue working on adding new features, improving performance, and squashing any remaining bugs to make the game even better.

Stay tuned for more updates, thank you!
