Inspiration

The inspiration for Discuto emerged from a growing concern about the deteriorating quality of online discourse. In today's digital landscape, social media platforms and online forums have become increasingly hostile environments where meaningful dialogue is often replaced by echo chambers, personal attacks, and performative outrage.

What it does

Discuto was born from the belief that technology, when thoughtfully designed, can actually improve rather than degrade human discourse. By combining AI-powered analysis with structured learning and verified identity systems, we aim to create a platform that rewards thoughtful, evidence-based arguments while providing users with the tools and knowledge they need to engage more constructively.

The platform's design philosophy centers around the idea that good faith dialogue is not just possible online: it can be actively encouraged and facilitated through the right combination of technology, education, and community design. By creating an environment where users are accountable for their contributions, rewarded for quality over quantity, and equipped with the skills to engage more effectively, Discuto seeks to demonstrate that online discourse can be both meaningful and transformative.

How we built it

Discuto combines modern web technologies with innovative AI integration to create a platform that actively improves online discourse quality.

Technical Stack: Built with React, TypeScript, and Supabase for a responsive, scalable application with real-time capabilities.

AI-Powered Analysis: Integrated ChatGPT API to provide real-time argument scoring (-100 to +100) and specific improvement suggestions. Every argument is analyzed for logical coherence, evidence quality, bias detection, and constructive tone.

Identity Verification (In Progress): Implemented multi-layer verification including facial recognition technology to ensure authentic human interaction and reduce bot influence on discussions.

Learning System: Created comprehensive interactive modules teaching logical fallacies, argumentation techniques, evidence evaluation, and constructive disagreement strategies with progress tracking and achievement badges.

Quality Scoring (In Progress): Developed a multi-dimensional scoring algorithm that evaluates arguments across logical quality, evidence credibility, constructive tone, and balance. High-quality contributions receive increased visibility through a trending system that prioritizes thoughtful discourse over inflammatory content.

Real-Time Features: Custom rich text editor with AI assistance, advanced search with semantic understanding, and comprehensive analytics help users track their growth as critical thinkers while maintaining fast performance across all devices.

The result is a platform that doesn't just host discussions: it actively improves them through technology, education, and thoughtful design.

Challenges we ran into

NOTE: My project is currently set to Private. Bolt won't let me set it to Secret.

Identity Verification Complexity: Implementing facial recognition while balancing security, privacy, and user experience requires significant technical and ethical considerations. The system needed to be robust enough to prevent abuse without being overly intrusive.

Scoring Quality: Scoring can be difficult to accomplish fairly. Further, AI can have a bias and skew conversations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Lowering the Temperature of Online Discourse: Discuto will shift the incentive structure away from inflammatory content toward constructive dialogue. Our AI-powered scoring system and visibility algorithm reward thoughtful, evidence-based arguments, creating an environment where users feel heard and respected rather than attacked.

Building a Community of Critical Thinkers: Through our structured learning platform, we hope to help thousands of users develop essential critical thinking skills. Interactive modules on logical fallacies and evidence evaluation, combined with our gamified achievement system, will create a community actively working to improve their argumentation abilities.

Proving Good Faith Dialogue is Possible Online: By implementing identity verification and reputation systems, we hope to demonstrate that online discourse can be both passionate and respectful. Users who might otherwise engage in personal attacks are guided toward more constructive forms of disagreement through AI-powered feedback.

Fostering Cross-Partisan Understanding: Discuto will create a space where people with different political views can engage in meaningful dialogue. The platform's emphasis on evidence-based arguments will help users find common ground and develop greater respect for opposing viewpoints, even when they disagree.

Creating a Model for Better Online Spaces: We've shown that social media platforms can prioritize quality over quantity, evidence over emotion, and understanding over winning. Discuto serves as proof that online spaces can bring out the best in people rather than the worst.

The most rewarding accomplishment will be users transforming from frustrated participants in toxic online spaces to confident contributors in meaningful dialogue—every constructive argument represents a victory in our mission to make the internet a better place for discourse.

What we learned

People Want Better Discourse: Despite the common narrative that users prefer inflammatory content, we discovered that people are hungry for meaningful, respectful dialogue. When given the right tools and environment, users consistently choose quality over quantity and evidence over emotion.

AI Can Be a Force for Good in Social Media: Our integration with ChatGPT will prove that AI can actively improve human discourse rather than just optimize for engagement. Real-time feedback and scoring helps users become better communicators, challenging the assumption that AI in social media must be manipulative.

Identity Verification Changes Behavior: Implementing verification systems will dramatically improved discussion quality. When users know they're speaking with real people and are accountable for their contributions, they engage more thoughtfully and respectfully.

What's next for Discuto

Live Debate Platform: We plan on developing a real-time debate feature that will allow users to engage in structured, timed debates with AI-powered moderation. This will include live audience voting, real-time fact-checking, and instant feedback on argument quality during active discussions.

Enhanced AI Analysis: Our scoring algorithm is currently being fine-tuned and tested with a growing dataset of user interactions. We're working to improve accuracy, reduce bias, and provide even more specific, actionable feedback to help users craft better arguments.

Advanced Identity Verification: The facial recognition system is still in development, with plans to integrate additional verification methods including document verification and social media cross-referencing to ensure authentic human interaction while maintaining user privacy.

Mobile App Development: We plan to build native mobile applications for iOS and Android to make quality discourse accessible anywhere, with offline capabilities for learning modules and push notifications for meaningful discussions.

Educational Partnerships: Plans are underway to partner with universities and educational institutions to integrate Discuto into curricula, creating formal learning pathways for critical thinking and civil discourse.

Multilingual Support: Expanding the platform to support multiple languages, making constructive dialogue accessible to global communities and enabling cross-cultural understanding.

Advanced Analytics Dashboard: Creating comprehensive analytics tools for users to track their growth as critical thinkers, identify areas for improvement, and understand their discussion patterns over time.
