Inspiration
Going into this project, we knew we wanted to help close the gap between those with disabilities and able-bodied people. Since it is such a wide scope, we decided to focus on dyslexia and making websites more comfortable to navigate so that everyone can easily access and use them.
What it does
DISCOver is a chrome extension that helps customize the way a websites looks so that the user can navigate websites with ease. The user can change the font size, font style, and background color to
How we built it
We hosted our project on Repl.it and used html, JavaScript, and CSS to create the extension and style it. We created our logo using Canva as well. To test out the extension so we could debug it, we downloaded it and added it to the chrome extensions page in developer's mode.
Challenges we ran into
None of us actually knew how to create an extension going into this, however, determined, we researched and figured out a way that was possible with our skillset: using Repl.it. Debugging also proved to be a challenge, as although we had some experience in html, our knowledge of JavaScript and CSS was limited.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a working extension that can customize websites to how the user sees fit and being able to debug some of the issues we ran into with the code.
What we learned
We learned how to make an extension for the first time using Repl.it. We also were able to explore various html, JavaScript, and CSS concepts, which some of our teammates were completely new to.
What's next for DISCOver
- Optical Character Recognition to scan and format words from pictures or text not affected by CSS changes (not embedded in website)
- Text to voice definition tool for users to be able to hear certain words out loud and their definitions if needed
- Voice to text writing tool for dyslexic people to use while writing if they need help with a word, so that they can say a word and it will automatically be written in for them
