Inspiration
We are pushing forward the volunteering of the next century. Nowadays, many people can code and have access to technology that enable them to make a huge impact. We believe that these people can be connected and incentivated to collaborate with projects that make a social impact through open source software. Our vision is that to have a positive and sustainable impact in our society, one does not need to go to Africa for 5 months to teach, for example. The positive impact can be, instead, directly made by writing code and contributing with open source projects that are working in the field, solving problems that the locals believe are important.
What it does
Discover is a platform that lists open source projects with social innovation goals. We also keep track of the project's activity (pull requests, opened and closed issues, etc..) and show it to the users. In addition, Discover keeps track of the user's contributions in the different projects. We also implemented a donation system. People can make donations through our platform to any of the listed projects. These donations are then distributed among the project's contributors, according to how much did they contribute to the project.
How I built it
With lots of love. Also, using nodejs for the backend, github API for gathering all the open source contributions and project's activity. For the frontend we used Angular.js and the good ol' bootstrap.
Challenges I ran into
Lack of time and consequent need of prioritization and good time management. This is always the tricky part in all hackatons: to try to understand what to finish, what to polish and what to leave behind until the demo.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
To have gathered such committed and awesome team. We worked a lot together to get this stuff done. Also, to be able to integrate Klarna beautifully in the concept and add another dimension to the whole project, by giving the contributors incentives to keep doing so.
What I learned
Integrating and using Klarna. And to enjoy a good cup of Ambronite.
What's next for Discover
Keep it up, trim and polish the edges and keep contacting companies and people interested of being part of this project.
