Inspiration
Streamlined communication can save a lot of time for mods and users alike. Many moderation teams use Discord and Telegram due to its feature rich capabilities for channel and role customization, and user friendly UI. When a modmail comes in, there's not an effective way to communicate with the rest of the team to agree on an action plan. I often see screenshots of modmail on discord and we use ✅ and ❌ reactions to vote on a consesus.
What it does
Discorddit allows moderators to create community chat channels with customized roles/permissions and also manage their modmail as a team. Messages support in-app reactions and share links to help users and moderators drive conversations and context.
How we built it
I used some wizardy magic and the help of feedback from my fellow mod on the mod council. This post within the mod council helped provide some direction. https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditModCouncil/comments/1thw464/were_doing_some_discord_research/
Challenges we ran into
Building a feature rich expeirence with a simple UI is not easy. Less is more.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a notification system without having the ability to send push notifications. In future, I hope that I can be considered to allow official push notifications so users can stay up to date on community conversations and replies.
What we learned
Users will always find ways to abuse a public tool. The first version of this has built in moderation tools to remove and mute abusers.
What's next for Discorddit
I'd like for users to be able to see and subscribe to other community chat channels managed by other subreddits to help promote cross-community discovery. I'll be working on an external database to achieve this functionality.
