Inspiration
Due to the pandemic, we've all probably had online classes, and we all know they are not that fun. For us, the worst part was meeting people. So when we saw this challenge, we immediately wanted to tackle how to solve this problem.
What it does
With this Discord bot you can add previous classes, goals for the current class, and personal hobbies. Then when the teacher is ready, they can tell the Discord bot to pair students together based on these interests. Everyone will have a unique pair for the class, someone they can reach out to with questions and hopefully have a connection with.
How we built it
This was all built off of python3. There is some specific Discord stuff, and some sqlite3, but python3 is the major component.
Challenges we ran into
It was definitely challenging learning Discord's specific setup. And with more time this is definitely the area that we would improve most. There is a lot of room for scalability to make the interfacing more accessible and easier to understand.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is both of our's first Codefest, so we are really just proud to have something to show for it. And we learned some new stuff along the way. Also, it is always good to apply some real coding skills and get out of the classroom's homework structure.
What we learned
Planning is key! We spent the first day really thinking through our idea and answering any questions. But we could have/should have gone further to include some more structure. Like planning our classes or database columns. What time we spend in extra planning would probably solve future headaches.
What's next for Discord Friend Finder Bot
There is definitely room for improvement here, and we might develop it more. We think the idea is a good one, so it cannot heart to keep thinking about it.
