Inspiration
Discón Zombión (Le Queen) is episode 9 in my ongoing surreal variety show, Discón Zombión. The series blends satire, music, and undead performance art — each episode a standalone dive into post-apocalyptic glamor. As a house DJ in the 1990s, I spun and produced House music during the heyday of Le Queen, a legendary Paris nightclub, although never made it to Paris during this time of my life. This episode marks my return to producing original house music for the first time since the early 2000s, channeling the authentic sound and spirit of that era. Although no longer fluent, I studied French, which helped shape the tone and rhythm of this episode’s dialogue.
What it does
This French-language short reimagines Le Queen as a timeless, undead nightclub pulsing with house beats. A zombie DJ performs original music in a decaying yet vibrant setting. Spanish subtitles guide the viewer through the surreal experience, ending with a satirical commercial — a signature of the Discón Zombión format. It’s a hypnotic blend of rhythm, decay, and camp.
How we built it
The project was built using AI tools for visual design, editing, and stylization. The music was produced using traditional production tools, with a focus on recreating the feel of 1990s house. My DJ experience directly shaped the timing — I remixed the tracks to match the visual pacing, treating scenes like beats in a set.
Challenges we ran into
Reentering music production after a long break was both exciting and technically demanding. Capturing the 1990s house vibe required careful attention to rhythm and texture. Balancing horror, glamor, and satire meant constantly refining tone. Working with AI tools introduced new creative possibilities but also required experimentation to maintain a cohesive aesthetic.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a world that feels both eerie and celebratory. I’m proud of returning to music production and expanding the Discón Zombión universe with original tracks and a distinct visual identity. The satirical commercial adds a punch of humor and critique, reinforcing the variety show format. This episode stands out as a fusion of personal history, club mythology, and undead imagination. I received comments and appreciation from French DJ's and other DJs from different parts of the world who appreciated the authenticity of that era.
What we learned
We learned how to tell stories through rhythm, mood, and minimal dialogue. That satire and surrealism can coexist with emotional resonance. That music production, even after years away, can be rediscovered with fresh perspective. I feel that having been a producer and DJ has given me an advantage with how to time and edit video.
What's next for Discón Zombión (Le Queen)
The Discón Zombión series will continue with new episodes in Spanish and English, each exploring different undead performers and sonic styles.
