Inspiration
When I work with AI, I often like the ugly, mis-formed results. I call it AI funk — the strange, imperfect outputs that feel raw and alive. Sometimes I will like a completely wrong result and that can take the story somewhere else, somewhere I didn't even imagine. Those tend to be the best results for me. It opens up my creativity to a completely new level.
I remembered the variety shows I watched as a kid and thought about how I could incorporate that chaotic energy into short film. I also admire parody and satire, and when I was younger, I spent a lot of time at dance clubs. All of that — the funk, the satire, the rhythm — came together in this series. I also write the music, which lets me shape the emotional tone and reinforce the absurdity through sound.
What it does
A Spanish-language sketch comedy short set in a post-apocalyptic world. It features undead characters delivering surreal, irreverent humor through parody and performance. The episode blends AI-generated quirks—what I call AI funk—with live editing and voice work to create a chaotic, character-driven comedy. It’s weird, witty, and intentionally imperfect.
How We Built It
I used many models on the OpenArt AI platform to generate most of the images. The video itself was created using OpenArt AI and Runway AI, combining different outputs to build the visual flow. I also edited the visuals using graphical art tools like Photoshop to refine timing, composition, and texture and to supplement the visuals. The music was written and composed by me, allowing the tone and rhythm to match the surreal energy of the piece. The process was a mix of AI experimentation and hands-on editing — embracing imperfection while shaping something uniquely expressive.
Challenges We Ran Into
One major challenge was getting AI tools to do what I actually wanted — they often misinterpreted prompts or produced results that were wildly off. In the early episodes, I didn’t have access to some of the models that became available just a few months later, which limited the visual quality and flexibility. Lip sync is still a problem: current tools struggle with non-human characters, making it difficult to match dialogue with undead mouths. Another challenge was editing — many tools are either missing key features or have steep learning curves, which slowed down the creative process and made refinement harder than expected.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We’re proud of creating something truly unique — a surreal, AI-infused comedy that stands out for its weirdness and rhythm. By embracing imperfection and leaning into AI funk, we built a style that’s hard to categorize but easy to remember. The project has started picking up followers, which is exciting and affirming. It means the work is resonating with people who appreciate its strange charm.
What We Learned
Each of the current 8 episodes taught me something new about working with AI, writing surreal comedy, and blending music with visuals. I started using more animation, experimenting with different languages, and exploring ways to reach new demographics. I learned how to push through technical limitations and embrace the weirdness that comes from imperfect tools. The process helped me refine my voice and develop a style that’s uniquely mine. In this episode, I animated some of the scenes that before, would have been static images.
What's Next for Discón Zombión (Episodio 2)
I plan to create a full season of 13 episodes, each exploring new characters, styles, and surreal scenarios. Future episodes will continue to experiment with animation, languages, and AI funk, while expanding the musical and comedic range. I’ve also started releasing some of the original music outside of the series, opening up new ways to connect with audiences and build a sonic identity beyond the screen. Someday, I hope to expand the project into a full 60-minute variety show format — a chaotic, genre-bending experience that brings together music, sketches, animation, and AI-driven weirdness. I have some music videos in the works.
