The Mark Morris Dance Group, led by Artistic Director and world renowned choreographer Mark Morris, is one of the world’s leading modern dance companies. Founded in 1980, MMDG performs selections from its repertory of 140+ dances in cities across the U.S. and around the world year-round. Distinguished as the only modern dance company committed to live music at every performance, MMDG founded the MMDG Music Ensemble in 1996 to perform with the company in addition to eminent guest musicians and local orchestras and choirs in tour cities.
In 2001, MMDG opened the Mark Morris Dance Center to serve as a cultural resource providing essential access to the arts for all members of the community. Located in the Downtown Brooklyn Cultural District, the Dance Center serves over 7,000 community members each year through free and low-cost programming including: dance and music classes for all ages and abilities in a variety of genres from ballet to belly dancing; free 10-week dance residencies in local public schools for 800 kids in grades 1-4; free dance classes for 100 kids, teens, and seniors living in public housing developments; free dance classes for over 400 people with Parkinson’s disease in NYC and teacher training workshops to foster to expansion of the program now in over 100 communities worldwide; and rental of the Dance Center’s 7 fully equipped studios at deeply discounted rates for local dance companies and individual artists
