Inspiration

Natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, cyclones cause significant damage to lives and property every year. Many communities receive warnings too late to take effective action. We wanted to build a smart, AI-powered solution that predicts potential disasters early and instantly alerts people, helping them prepare and respond in time.

What it does

The Disaster Prediction and Alert System collects real-time weather and environmental data to identify potential disaster risks. Using machine learning, the system analyzes patterns and predicts the likelihood of disasters such as floods, storms, and wildfires.

When a high-risk situation is detected, the platform:

  • Sends instant alerts to users.
  • Displays affected locations on an interactive map.
  • Shows disaster severity and safety recommendations.
  • Provides emergency contact information and evacuation guidance.

How we built it

We developed the application using:

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • Backend: Python (Flask)
  • Machine Learning: Pandas, NumPy
  • Database: MongoDB
  • APIs: Weather API for real-time weather data
  • Maps: Google Maps or Leaflet for location visualization

The ML model was trained on historical disaster and weather datasets to estimate disaster risk based on environmental conditions.

Challenges we ran into

  • Finding reliable and clean historical disaster datasets.
  • Integrating real-time weather APIs with the prediction model.
  • Reducing false positives while maintaining accurate predictions.
  • Delivering alerts quickly and displaying them on an interactive map.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built an end-to-end disaster prediction platform.
  • Successfully integrated AI predictions with live weather data.
  • Implemented real-time alert notifications.
  • Designed a clean, user-friendly dashboard for monitoring disaster risks.

What we learned

This project helped us gain experience in machine learning, real-time data processing, API integration, and full-stack web development. We also learned the importance of building reliable AI systems for real-world emergency situations.

What's next for Disaster Prediction and Alert System

Future improvements include:

  • More accurate deep learning prediction models.
  • Support for additional disaster types.
  • SMS and mobile push notifications.
  • Multi-language support.
  • IoT sensor integration for real-time environmental monitoring.
  • Offline emergency alerts for low-connectivity areas.
