Inspiration
We came from a country prone to natural disasters and have first hand experience with poor disaster management. The want and inability to get involved and volunteer for the disaster management of 2015's 7.8 richter scale earthquake in Nepal was the main inspiration for this project. Giving the power and ability to volunteers in and around the disaster area willing to provide assistance to needy is a main goal of this project.
What it does
Volunteers are matched with ride seekers in their vicinity (within radius) by our shortest path algorithm; Volunteers are shown seekers within their driving distance radius. Seekers are someone who are stuck and looking for help during a dire situation. Volunteers aid seekers reach the nearest shelter/safe-house.
How we built it
Me made a web application, using HTML in the front-end, python in back and mysql in the database. The front end gives options for user to navigate on volunteer page as well as seeker page. The mapquest api was used to find seeker's location within volunteer's reach using shortest driving distance method. The application is hosted on Heroku.
Challenges we ran into
Time was the biggest challenges as we had plans to build a wholesome disaster management democratizing application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to create a fully functioning web application that gives the information of seekers to the volunteers. Minds from different disciplines came together to work on this project seamlessly.
What we learned
We learned to work on a group with people from different background within a short period of time. Technically, majority of the work we did was the first time. So we can say we learned a lot in the process of web development.
What's next for Disaster Managemant
For our disaster management system, the next step would be making our application more attractive and add more features like navigating, adding maps, matching people-in-need with different resources during a disaster, and volunteer/seeker login for their history.
