Inspiration
Natural disasters such as earthquakes, wildfires, floods, and severe storms affect millions of people every year. While researching these events, we noticed that information is often scattered across multiple platforms, making it difficult for communities to quickly access reliable updates, safety recommendations, and response strategies in one place. This inspired us to create Disaster Eye, a platform designed to bring together real-time disaster information, prevention measures, and emergency guidance into a single, accessible solution.
What it does
Disaster Eye is a web-based platform that provides users with essential information about various natural disasters, including earthquakes, wildfires, floods, storms, and tornadoes. The platform combines real-time information, prevention measures, safety recommendations, and emergency response guidance. Users can learn about ongoing events and receive practical advice on how to react before, during, and after a disaster.
How we built it
We built Disaster Eye using Python and HTML as our primary technologies. Python was used for processing data, handling logic, and integrating information from external sources, while HTML was used to create the structure and user interface of the website. We combined these technologies to build a platform capable of presenting disaster-related information in a clear and user-friendly way.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing an intuitive and visually appealing website. Since our experience with HTML was mainly at a basic level, creating a professional-looking interface that was both attractive and easy to navigate required a significant amount of experimentation and improvement. Another major challenge was finding reliable real-world data sources and determining how to connect that information to our platform. Understanding where to obtain accurate information and how to integrate it into our system took considerable research and problem-solving.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a platform that combines multiple types of natural disasters into a single solution. Instead of only presenting information about a disaster, Disaster Eye also provides prevention strategies, safety recommendations, and practical guidance for users. We are especially proud that the information displayed is based on real-world sources, making the platform more useful and relevant for communities facing potential emergency situations.
What we learned
During this project, we learned how to work efficiently under time pressure, collaborate as a team, and transform an idea into a functional product . We also improved our Python and HTML skills, gained experience working with external data sources, and learned the importance of designing technology that is both functional and accessible to users.
What's next for Disaster Eye
Our next goal is to expand Disaster Eye into a mobile application, making disaster information even more accessible to users wherever they are. We also plan to collaborate with local communities and authorities to improve the platform's impact. By integrating local emergency resources and community-based information, Disaster Eye could become a valuable tool for helping people prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters more effectively.
