Inspiration
Andraea is deaf and has never found a platform to connect with other people, who are disabled too, in tech. We wanted to create a website that would allow that connection to happen.
What it does
Disability In Tech’s mission is to connect those, who are empowered by their gifts of disabilities, to other people with the same ability who work in tech. The aim of this is to engage others with resources and networking that will unite them all with a larger community of people.
How we built it
We built the design comp in Adobe XD only
Challenges we ran into
- Getting the coediting working on Adobe XD
- Deciding on a colour scheme that would be suitable for colour blind users
- It was tempting to separate the users, via their disabilities, but then we put them all together
- Finding the right images
- Trying to communicate everything over a Slack call when it would've been easier in the same room together
- Slack video call does not have the option of captions, so it was challenging for Andraea to understand Naomi over video
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Making this design while being in two different time zones
- Creating an opportunity to connect disabilities in tech and bring the communities together
- Students from Skillcrush connecting and working together
- Empowering women and non-binary
What we learned
- We're a great team and we worked well together despite time differences
- There is a big gap in the tech community for disabled workers to get support and connections
What's next for Disability in Tech
- To be coded up into a live website!
