I was inspired to create DINOS-AR to make learning more exciting for young scholars! Almost every kid loves dinosaurs and educators can use dinosaurs to make students passionate about learning.
DINOS-AR aims to make learning about dinosaurs even more exciting with the help of Augmented Reality.
What it does
DINOS-AR is a library of four different dinosaurs: the T-Rex, the triceratops, the pterodactyl, and the velociraptor. Users can scroll through the different dinosaur options to learn more about their respective timelines, habitats, diets, and more!
Most importantly, DINOS-AR offers 3D models so students can visualize the dinosaurs in real time. Next to each informational snapshot, DINOS-AR includes an image of the dinosaur model and a scannable QR code.
Once you scan the QR code with a mobile device, you'll be able to view the model in VR and AR. This lets you place the dinosaur on a surface in your house!
How I built it
The webapp was built with HTML/CSS on repl.it. I also used the Bootstrap library to enhance some of my CSS as well as Google Fonts API to customize some of my text styling.
I used my own models from 3D Paint in concert with the echoAR platform to bring the dinosaurs to life in augmented reality.
Challenges I ran into
One challenge I ran into was finding a good idea and application for an AR project. I really wanted to use this hackathon to explore echoAR, but I also wanted my project to have a purpose or solve a problem.
Augmented reality can be used to make it appear as if something exists right next to us-- even if there's really nothing there at all. Since dinosaurs are extinct, I thought it would be a fun endeavor to let kids see what dinosaurs would look like in real time. AR lets us do just that!
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud of learning how to use echoAR for the first time and creating a project with 3D models.
What I learned
I learned how to use QR codes with echoAR and how to make my own models with the help of 3D Paint.
What's next for DINOS-AR
I hope to add more models to the DINOS-AR library and add more fun facts for the individual dinosaurs.
