Inspiration
Countless times I have found myself listlessly pressing the up and down arrow keys to dodge the monochromatic cacti and pterodactyls in my childhood, due to the shoddy and barely functional internet that only worked in bursts I had. So, to revitalize that nostalgia, my project for this hackathon is to revamp this game with upgraded mechanics and visuals that would fill those internet-less gaps.
What it does
Building upon the tried and true endless runner game, there are revamped hand-drawn 8-bit-esque visuals along with updated mechanics such as upgrades for double jumping and flying.
How we built it
This project is primarily built within Python using the pygame library.
Challenges we ran into
Doing 8-bit graphics was a surprising challenge that took a lot of trial and error. The initial designs were unattractive at best and an eyesore at worst with it's mishmash of contrasting bright colors. It was also challenging working within the 2 day time limit in a language I am still actively learning.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm pleased with how seamless all the upgrades work with the core gameplay of the game, with none of them feeling too out of place or unappealing. I'm also quite proud with the graphics, seeing how they came from the earlier designs.
What we learned
I learned a lot about the pygame library and the Python language in general. Also, as my first hackathon, I learned a ton about the time constraints and setting realistic goals.
What's next for Dino Game Plus
I would love to implement a weather system (there is already some existing code) that would make further amplify this game's cozy feel.
