Inspiration
We constantly struggle to find food that we like in the dining halls. While the university website lists what food is available at different dining locations, the station names are outdated, and the photos are often misleading.
What it does
Dinner Decider leverages the UDel community to take the guesswork out of finding meals you enjoy. Users can upload posts about food they enjoy at each dining location, follow stations they commonly like to see those reviews at the top, and subscribe to other users with similar tastes.
How we built it
We built the backend using Django/Python and the front end using HTML/CSS
Challenges we ran into
Neither of us had ever used Django before, so we had a steep learning curve at the start, getting used to the setup. We also often had issues with CSS styling.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The system offers a lot of flexibility in what the user chooses to see. This took a lot of work to ensure that all user options were not only called but also stored.
What we learned
We learned a lot about backend website development in Python and about using HTML/CSS.
What's next for Dinner Decider
Systems we have yet to implement include:
- Adding a likes/dislikes system
- Adding a better sorting algorithm for the feed section using likes
- Adding a better system for creating new user accounts
- Adding an optional nutrition facts field
