Inspiration

We discussed how great things like speech and text recognition were developed rigth now and where available to use for free, allowing developers to use this technologies to make an easier, inclusive, and more accessible world for all of us.

What it does

Our app has two main functions: find on a menu what you would like according to your personal tastes and alert you about your allergies of non-pleasant foods, and have the ability to calculate what you are going to pay afterwards by scanning and processing the bill.

We wanted the app to help people waste less time deciding, be aware of some foods that might be dangerous, make menues more accessible to people that cannot read or see very well and have a practical way to calculate and share a recipt with your friends, keeping track of each transaction.

How we built it

We found Google's Optical Chracater Recognition (OCR) API for free in Android Studio so we implemented it, trying to make the UX experience as smooth as possible.

Challenges we ran into

Of course, the most challenging part about of developing was using Android Studio, in which only one of us has experience with. Also, we had so many ideas that we wanted to implement, but at the end we managed to get a cool solution. Also, time was a really big contraint.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We learned more about Android Studio and how you can achieve many things with it; also, we think that this may be a good app for accesibility.

What's next for Dinex

The user communication can develop further into a Splitwise-like experience, to get the full dining process, combinig it from the process in which you start to find a restaurant (linking it to Google map's recomendations) to the paying process like Paypal. We think that, in a near future, humanity will have the hability to interconect all services and experiences into a big process, just as the small everyday experience of eating.

Also, there is another feature that we didn't really implemented which was the translation and search definition of written words, as well as having a large social media rating the dishes. It would be so usefull for travelers or foreigners that don't know how's the food in the place they are visiting.
