Inspiration:
As first years, we were simply overwhelmed with the amount of food options that were offered in the dining hall. At first, it was amazing to try everything, but as time went on; we started to notice a trend. Our ability to eat healthy was diminished by the abundance and variety of food. We wished there was an easier way to find the nutritious options to eat.
What it does
Our app uses data from the dining halls of Georgia Tech and user inputs to generate nutritious personalized meal recommendations for Georgia Tech Students.
How we built it
We used a combination of PHP and mySQL coded by XAMPP. Using data from GT Dining, we created several algorithms based on the Nutrition Standards and Meal Requirements from the NIH & CDC to create a personalized experience for each student.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we faced was finding a platform to create/host the Web App. Based on our unique and talents and skills we eventually decided on PHP & mySQL via XAMPP allowing for accessibility across all devices.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We integrated data from GT Dining to guide meal selection processes, increasing relevancy/accurancy.
What we learned
Create a Web App and gaining familiarity with several coding concepts/languages.
What's next for DineSmart
Expanding it Different Colleges beyond Georgia Tech, and also helping create a nutrition tracking attempt for students in the long-term.
