Inspiration
When trying to think about common problems for college students, we realized that many people are forced to eat alone. Sometimes your schedule doesn't match up with your friends'. Sometimes you don't have friends. Although people are growing more technologically active, people are actually feeling more isolated than ever. We wanted to encourage people to create real relationships and facilitate interaction within this solo-dining community to make sure no one ever has to eat alone again.
What it does
Dinder is a location-based app that allows you to match with others who also lack a dining partner. You can look through bios and find a friend to eat with. After the experience, you can rate your partner.
How we built it
We used Android Studio to build the app and the Google Places API for the location-based portion.
Challenges we ran into
We came into the hackathon with a completely different idea and ended up changing it to Dinder. We also were not able to access the $100 credits from Amazon Web Services and therefore were not able to create a mock database. Because of this, we had to instead load the application with dummy data to create a good demo.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Three-fourths of our team came in never having attended a hackathon, but we were able to learn new concepts and apply them to actually submit a demo app. We got the opportunity to learn more about concepts that we may not get to pursue in our undergraduate education. Most importantly, we were able to form relationships with others who shared our interests and passions while creating a product to bring people together.
What we learned
We learned about Android development, databases, teamwork, the development process, problem-solving, and communication.
What's next for Dinder
Funding. We hope to implement a demo that actually utilizes databases and servers.
