Inspiration
Our main inspiration for the project was our struggles to seamlessly split payments with our friends.
What it does
Our project allows for simple split payments between registered members by having them send transfer requests to a group or individual. Every member involved in a group transfer payment will pay an equal amount towards the joint sum set by the member to create the transfer. ACH transfers ensure that members pay no fees on payments.
How we built it
Our project has a signup and login flow to enroll new members, and then it uses the Dwolla API for ACH transfers between registered members. Using the Dwolla API enables us to provide bank transfers and our user account structure allows us to set up payments between any two users at their request.
Challenges we ran into
Understanding and implementing the Dwolla API was an incredible challenge that we faced during the development of our project. The amount of data that we had to keep track of as a group was difficult to manage, especially for use with an unfamiliar technology.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our adaptation and perseverance that it took to create a prototype using the Dwolla API. Our current implementation has limited usability in development, but it is ready to handle real ACH transfers with the account creation system that we managed to implement.
What we learned
We learned what it takes to create a layered data management platform, and we learned how to navigate and leverage complex APIs to achieve our intended functionality.
What's next for Dime
For now, becuase our project is restricted to development, it costs money to enable the ACH transfer system. We are going to improve the user interface, add more basic usability, (name lookup, friends list, and then we will consider making an investment to test the efficiency that we can reach.
