Inspiration

DiMANA was inspired by a simple but memorable moment at CHAGEE. While sitting together and chatting about photos and memories, we noticed a decorative world map wall inside the store. That moment sparked an idea: what if travel memories could be pinned onto an interactive world instead of being stored in a normal gallery?

We realized that many people take countless travel photos, but over time those memories become buried in their camera rolls and slowly lose their emotional value. We wanted to create something more immersive — a platform where users could visually revisit their journeys, relive their experiences, and build a meaningful digital legacy through exploration and storytelling.

What it does

DiMANA is an interactive, gamified travel journaling web application that transforms real-world adventures into a lasting digital legacy.

Users can pin memories onto a 3D interactive globe, upload travel photos and journal entries, track visited places and milestones, explore memories through an immersive map experience, progress through a cute companion evolution system and organize memories by location, timeline, and achievements.

The platform focuses on emotional storytelling, exploration, and long-term memory preservation rather than just social sharing.

How we built it

We designed the project with a modern web stack focused on interactivity, animation, and immersive UI/UX design.

Some major components included interactive 3D globe rendering, custom UI/UX design with a cozy cartoon aesthetic, responsive dashboard and travel journal system, dynamic memory storage and retrieval, gamified progression mechanics and also interactive animations and transitions.

We iterated heavily on the visual design to create a soft, playful, and emotionally engaging experience. A large part of development involved balancing technical functionality with the cute, cozy atmosphere we envisioned.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was implementing the 3D globe system. We encountered multiple rendering issues, including broken texture mapping, globe distortion, incorrect Earth projections, UV wrapping problems and interaction and rotation bugs.

Another major challenge was maintaining performance while keeping the application visually rich and interactive. Since the project relied heavily on animations, transparency effects, and layered UI components, optimizing responsiveness became an important part of development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of our biggest accomplishments was successfully building an interactive 3D globe system that allows users to visually connect their travel memories with real-world locations. Turning a simple idea into a working immersive experience was both exciting and challenging for our team.

We are also proud of creating a unique and emotionally engaging concept instead of a traditional travel diary app. By combining gamification, memory preservation, interactive mapping, and a cozy cartoon aesthetic, we created an experience that feels personal and playful.

Another accomplishment was our UI/UX transformation process. Throughout development, we continuously refined the interface from a basic dashboard into a softer, more immersive design inspired by cozy exploration games. We learned how important visual storytelling, consistency, and user experience are in making an application memorable.

Most importantly, we are proud of overcoming technical challenges together as a team — especially issues related to globe rendering, texture mapping, interaction systems, and responsive design. Despite many iterations and debugging sessions, we continued improving the project while learning new technologies and design approaches along the way.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how interactive 3D rendering works in web applications, the importance of proper texture mapping and geometry handling, UI/UX principles for immersive applications, how gamification increases user engagement, the necessary of iterative design and testing and how teamwork and communication shape large creative projects.

Most importantly, we learned that creating emotional digital experiences requires both technical problem-solving and thoughtful storytelling.

What's next for DiMANA Travel Diary

In the future, we hope to expand DiMANA with better globe interactions and smoother animations, AI-generated travel summaries and achievement systems and collectible rewards

Our goal is to make DiMANA feel like a magical digital scrapbook that grows alongside the user’s real-world adventures.
