Inspiration
Dignifi was inspired by a challenge we saw firsthand: for people coming home from incarceration, reentry is often overwhelming and full of invisible barriers—finding help with housing, work, health care, or just getting an ID shouldn’t be a maze. As returning citizens, advocates, and technologists, we realized that while many directories exist, few truly guide people based on their needs, location, or situation. The rise of AI-powered technology gave us hope that reentry resources could finally become transparent, responsive, and centered on lived experience.
What it does
Dignifi provides returning citizens with an integrated digital ecosystem that puts them in control of their reentry journey, available on both web and mobile. Here’s how it works:
Personal Roadmap: Users receive a custom “roadmap” outlining each critical step of reentry—like getting an ID, securing housing, accessing healthcare, or connecting with job opportunities. The roadmap adapts as needs change, making each journey personal.
Reentry Checklist: This interactive checklist keeps users organized and on track, breaking tasks into manageable actions (e.g., “Schedule a DMV appointment,” “Apply for CalFresh,” “Find job fairs near me”). Each completed task reflects real progress, not just more paperwork.
AI Chatbot: At any time, users can chat with Dignifi’s AI-powered, trauma-informed chatbot—ask questions, get tailored service referrals, and receive encouragement 24/7. The bot draws on community feedback and latest data to recommend resources that actually deliver.
Voice Agent: For those who prefer speaking or have trouble with text, Dignifi offers a friendly voice assistant. Users can call or activate the agent in-app to get step-by-step help, resource info, or just someone to listen—no judgment, no jargon.
Accessible Anywhere: Dignifi is fully optimized for both web and mobile devices. Whether at a public computer, on a borrowed phone, or with a smartphone in hand, users and supporters can access their roadmap, checklist, and chat features securely at any time.
Community-Powered Feedback: Every service can be reviewed, and users’ stories help surface what’s working (and what isn’t) for others—building an ecosystem of real accountability.
How we built it
Listening First We started by hearing directly from people coming home-- stories collected by the founding team, with firsthand experience navigating reentry. Their stories—feeling lost with “no clue what to do”; being forced into unsafe or dehumanizing housing; being tempted by old habits because support was nowhere to be found—became our blueprint. We mapped every pain point: housing, health, jobs, ID, and the emotional burden of being left out.
Ecosystem Design Dignifi brings reentrants, service providers, and policymakers into a single, accountable ecosystem. For the first time, real outcomes, real voices, and real data come together in one platform—so funding and attention flow to what actually works.
AI Integration & Personalization Our AI-powered chatbot, built on lived experience, gives reentrants a compass: instant, personalized resource matches, access to human-centered tech, and a feedback loop for honest reviews of services. Whether the user needs emergency shelter, a second-chance employer, or just someone who listens, Dignifi provides tailored, data-driven referrals—24/7.
User Experience & Control Reentrants can now control their journey: -Roadmap: See where you stand, what steps come next, and which organizations are making a real difference. -Compass: Personalized guidance and recommendations, informed by thousands of stories. -Simple, secure access—text, chat, or web—no complicated logins or paperwork required.
Feedback isn’t an afterthought—it’s the heart of the platform. We elevate reentrant voices so that success, pain, and progress are seen and counted.
Challenges we ran into
Data Quality: Service info is often outdated and inaccurate. We built continuous, community-driven feedback to flag issues and highlight what’s working. Scalability: Real-time, personalized support for thousands of users means rigorous tech, secure infrastructure, and an endlessly evolving knowledge base, but we're optimistic we can meet the challenge and scale this longterm. Balancing Personalization with Simplicity People need different things at different points in reentry, but too many options can overwhelm. We built smart defaults, clear questions, and a focus on what’s urgent now—with space to dig deeper if users want. Ethics & Trust Working with a vulnerable community means going beyond compliance—commitment to privacy, trauma-informed design, and giving power back to the user is foundational at Dignifi.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This weekend, our team turned vision into reality by building the following core features from the ground up:
Interactive Checklist: Created a seamless checklist system that breaks down daunting reentry steps into clear, motivating action items.
Voice Agent: Integrated a spoken-language assistant—delivering support for users who prefer talking, or who face literacy barriers.
Web and Mobile Access: Engineered the platform to be responsive and intuitive across both web browsers and mobile devices, making help available anywhere, anytime.
Launching all these features in a single weekend shows what’s possible when lived experience, technology, and urgency come together for real change in reentry. These accomplishments lay the groundwork for a future where dignity, agency, and results become standard—not the exception.
What we learned
A fractured ecosystem leaves reentrants feeling isolated, ignored, and desperate—even as they cost the state $135,000/year per person.
Outcome data is missing—organizations making true impact go overlooked, while failed programs continue unchallenged.
People need agency, trusted guidance, and a sense of control over their journey. One-size-fits-all handbooks and dusty directories aren’t enough.
Dignity, hope, and support must come first—delivered by a technology that listens, learns, and connects human stories with solutions.
What's next for Dignifi
Dignifi envisions a future where reentrants have the right opportunities—a clear, dignified path to stability, purpose, and leadership. By combining technology with the power of human stories, we’re raising the bar for reentry support in California and beyond.
We’re working toward a system where:
Impactful organizations never go unnoticed.
Government investments are tracked, measured, and finally made accountable.
Every person coming home has more than a few dollars and no direction—they have a roadmap forward, a feedback-driven support network, and hope.
We invite anyone—reentrants, organizations, policymakers—to join this movement for a more inclusive, transparent, and human-centered future. Dignifi’s purpose is in the name: putting dignity, accountability, and real solutions at the center of reentry.
