Inspiration
Greetings, I am a 2nd-year college student who wanted to explore and get a hang of hackathons. I have attended various seminars and webinars that focus on the importance of hackathons in the life of a CSE graduate. This project was built to solve a situation that I faced some time back. I got the inspiration of creating this project from the urge to solve a real-life situation that a student has/will face in his/her life.
What it does
This project allows a person to sell their used papers, books, etc along with old metal, aluminum, and plastic goods at a decided price. You may have noticed that after we complete and move to the next level of education, we face a situation where we have accumulated a lot of used papers and old books. This project will help you to sell old books at the right price. It also provides a special price for books that are rated by the public. The more the ratings, the more is the special price for that book.Even if there is no rating or the book is not found in the database, it will still give some amount as a special price. These used books can be recycled and can be given to NGOs and the needful at low prices to spread knowledge and education opportunities.
This project also allows registering as a vendor as well. This also enhances the concept of start-ups and business. Once a person becomes a vendor, this program helps the clients to search for the nearest vendors by taking their addresses.
How we built it
This project is built using Java Swing & MySQL concepts. It collects the details of the vendors and clients using Java programming and stores them in a MySQL database. This project requires the knowledge of java swing along with the connectivity with the database.
A database is also created and updated constantly to store the rated books using a public books dataset. JDBC helps to retrieve the information on book ratings and supports in calculating the appropriate price of the used goods.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was to insert the dataset (.csv file) into the MySQL database. This required a new concept that I learned during this two-day hackathon that made my task easier. Another challenge that I faced to calculate the nearest vendor to a client required the knowledge of APIs and Services. Learning about APIs would have taken a lot of time, so I came up with another solution that was efficient and easier i.e. * pin codes*.
To calculate the nearest vendors, I used the concept of naming the pin code of a region. This also increased my knowledge in a general sense and also helped me in completing this project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This project helped me find new areas of java programming and helped me solve a real-world problem. One of the biggest things that I am proud of is that this project helps save the planet by reducing waste and makes the world a better place. I am proud of this idea that helped me increase my skills. Also, this project gave me a taste of hackathons and a fruitful experience.
What we learned
Working on this project exposed me to a new world of APIs and their Services which I wasn't aware of at the beginning. It also pushed me to think of other ways if you don't have the expert knowledge and experience with technology. When there is an ambition in mind, one makes all the attempts to achieve it.
What's next for Digital Vendors
Digital Vendors help solve a worldwide issue of waste management and have a lot of scopes. I will surely work on this project to make it even more efficient with the concepts of APIs, and databases and increase the reach of this idea. This project is very thoughtful to solve a situation that can't be avoided and hence it has an immense opportunity in the future to expand.
