The Digital Music School
Inspiration
The Idea is a much-needed answer to the struggles that arise from online music teaching. As a music teacher, Leonardo has experienced it himself. During this period every music teacher had to learn how to teach through a platform made for conference calls and not suited for teaching, especially music. Music lessons require a video conference tool, sharing the music sheet, upload several files, a chat, and being recorded for the student to learn on his mistakes. Furthermore, metronome and tuner are essential while practicing an instrument. Currently, a solution including a streaming video platform, an editable file-sharing system integrated with a File Management System, and a chat keeping track of the file modifications does not exist yet.
Solution
What music teachers need is a single page web-app with a low learning curve. Our solution will:
- provide smooth live music lessons, with no disruption, high-quality audio, and video;
- add the ability to share an easily accessible, editable sheet music;
- allow to book and keep track of completed and future lessons;
- guarantee a simple interface;
- integrate metronome and tuner;
- allow developers to implement extensions;
- integrate customer support;
This platform will target both private and public music institutions and individual teachers, allowing them to experience a smooth and pleasant remote music lesson.
Digital Music School will also help students being educated by the best teachers, regardless of their location nor any movement limitations. As well, teachers in the future will be able to keep working while traveling for concerts.
What we have done during the weekend
- We have redefined the roadmap and the business model;
- We have validated the idea with domain experts and decision-makers;
- While creating the video, we have challenged our creativity and explanation skills, as well as learned new tools;
- We have created a demo juxtaposing existing tools;
- We have created the UI mockups;
- We have made revenue and costs analysis;
Impact to the crisis
This tool will help teachers and students experiencing a smooth music lesson in the safest place nowadays: their homes. They protect themselves and others, without any interruption in their professions.
Value after the crisis
Teachers will be able to teach while traveling, as well as having a user-friendly tool to have an overview of past and future lessons. Furthermore, they will manage to reach a wider range of students, regardless of their location Students Students will have a tool to rewatch their performance and access again the teacher's instructions, without worrying about forgetting to record it nor losing any file. Like teachers, they will be able to choose their favorite teacher, regardless of their location, while having the best remote music learning experience.
Market analysis
The service will be offered to all conservatories and colleges of music in Europe, as to private teachers. To have an indicative figure, consider that
- only in the The Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen (AEC), which is an Europe-wide network, there are more than 300 member institutions;
- the system of conservatories in Italy consists of: 77 institutions of advanced musical education (54 state conservatories, 19 private, 4 accredited institutes); 50,000 students and 6,000 teachers;
- Germany has approximately 1.200.000 students and 39.000 teachers
Operational results
- First year operational results: -58550€
- Second year operational results: 107515€
- 2 years operational results: 48695€
What's next for us
- In the immediate future, our goal is to get admitted in an incubation program;
- Add an experienced full-stack or frontend developer in the team;
- Build the MVP;
- Gather the first users' feedbacks, and evolve accordingly;
- Set up a company;
- Design and implement a growth loop;
Challenges we ran into
All the team members were involved in other activities during the weekend, like teaching music, delivering a Master Thesis, or being part of another team at the EUvsVirus. Coordination and clear responsibilities hence were critical to successfully deliver on time.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
- All the members of the team had other commitments during the weekend, but despite that, we managed to deliver everything on time;
- We had good and clear communication. We managed to set common goals and divide tasks according to each one's skills set and strengths;
- We realized how productive we can be under pressure;
- At the end of the 3 days, we have much clearer ideas about our product/service than before;
What we have learned
- To coordinate the members' activities, with time and scheduling constraints;
- How to expose all the required information in a very short video;
- How to build animated presentations, and how to create an intuitive demo with existing tools;
Acknowledgments
We would like to thank all the people who organized this hackathon, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Committee of Regions, and the European Economic and Social Committee. We would like to thank all the volunteers who supported the team with their expertise and in particular our mentor Diana Andone, which provided us with essential feedback and notions, as with countless amazing tools crucial to deliver high-quality results in such a short amount of time.
