“Digital Metamorphosis”

Inspiration

We were inspired by how each of our TikTok feeds is shaped by algorithms that correspond to our social media habits. In turn, these algorithms influence our perceptions and shape our choices in daily life. Over time, these choices may change the way we think and even influence the development of our personalities based on what the algorithm feeds us.

What it does

The interactive film allows the audience to choose different paths for the narrator. Each choice leads to different outcomes and therefore produces different results. It shows the transformation of a first-year university student into later stages of her life (e.g., entering the workforce). It also shows how social media influences this process.

Because of the time limitations of this project, we provide one sample path that leads to a happy ending. One way to reach the happy ending is:

“Stop Watching” → “Study with Me” → “Take a Break and Scroll” → “15 Minutes” → “Apply for Internships.”

However, this is only one possible path. There are many different journeys. We encourage audiences to explore different paths and experience different outcomes. Choose carefully; not all of them end well!

How we built it

We first mapped out the narrative using mind maps, then filmed and edited the visuals. Finally, we used Figma to add interactive components to the project

Challenges we ran into

At first, we were unsure how to make the film interactive, since most platforms require subscriptions and we were not familiar with coding. However, we solved this challenge by using Figma’s prototyping features to create the interactive experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully transformed our ideas and imagination into a completed interactive prototype.

What we learned

Through this project, we improved our collaboration skills and explored a new approach to filmmaking as an interactive medium.

What's next for “Digital Metamorphosis”

Since this project currently exists as a prototype, we hope to further develop it into a fully functional interactive video in the future, allowing users to freely navigate between different narrative paths.
