Inspiration

Participating in this Digital ID Hackathon is driven by my firsthand experience with the challenges faced by smallholder farmers. I have seen situations where government initiatives, such as subsidy coupons for farm inputs, are designed to help these farmers but often miss their mark due to bureaucratic inefficiencies or are hijacked by elites. This not only deprives the farmers of much-needed support but also undermines trust in government programs. This experience inspired me to explore how digital identity solutions can ensure that aid reaches the right people. Digital IDs can provide a secure and verifiable means for farmers to access subsidies and other benefits directly, minimizing the risk of fraud and ensuring transparency. The potential to leverage technology to create more equitable and efficient systems for resource distribution is a powerful motivator for me. Additionally, the opportunity to collaborate with others who are passionate about using technology for social good is incredibly inspiring. I believe that by working together, we can develop innovative solutions that have a real impact on the lives of smallholder farmers and contribute to a more just and efficient agricultural system.

What it does

This use case enables participating stakeholders (governments, public/private players, and marketers) to offer farmers with necessary agricultural services. The government owns farmers' biometric and demographic information, which are used by public or commercial entities (such as the Ministry of Agriculture) to evaluate the services they provide to farmers. A farmer is allocated a suitable subsidy coupon by a private/public body. Farmers use this subsidy ticket to get farming inputs from any merchant around them. The information is automatically collected by the government, private/public institution, and vendor. This information will be used to process the payment. Another advantage is that the farmer's information can be reevaluated to establish his or her new subsidy.
