Inspiration
Being from Alabama, the digital divide is all around me. Whether it be people my age or my grandmother, access to the Internet in the rural South is a huge problem. Luckily, I attend a school where we have devices and can explore the study of Computer Science easily. Because of this opportunity I have, I wanted to extend this opportunity to other people my age by helping teach essential digital skills, whether it be Search Engine basics, Web conferencing, email basics, AI usage, etc.
What it does
Digital Harmonies spreads awareness about the Digital Divide and helps people combat it by providing online and in-person digital literacy workshops over a range of topics (Internet Basics, WebConferencing, Mobile Device Basics, AI Usage, and Cybersecurity). It also enables community-wide collaboration by establishing an online buddy system where people who are in need of a device can have one at their finger tips from a volunteer.
How we built it
Built initially from Figma, then used HTML, CSS, and Java to code the website.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring the website scales for mobile devices, balancing aesthetics with functionality, easy navigation system
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Overall site layout, images, engaging content, accessibility
What we learned
importance of UX and having easy navigation system, which pages to layout first, time management skills
What's next for Digital Harmonies
Taking workshops to local community centers
