Inspiration

The inspiration behind Digital GDM Screen came from seeing how many expectant mothers struggle to find reliable, easy-to-understand information about gestational diabetes. Medical literature is often overwhelming and misinformation online can put both mother and baby at risk. We wanted to bridge this gap using technology that is accessible and supportive.

What it does

The system provides instant, personalized and reliable answers to questions about gestational diabetes. It explains medical information in simple language, supports self-management and helps expectant mothers make informed decisions. Available 24/7, it reduces dependence on unreliable online sources and improves health literacy during pregnancy.

How we built it

We designed Digital GDM Screen by combining a retrieval-augmented AI chatbot with a curated medical knowledge base focused on gestational diabetes. The chatbot was built to provide conversational, user-friendly responses accessible via smartphone or computer. We focused on creating a simple interface, ensuring medical accuracy and testing usability with expectant mothers.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges we faced included ensuring medical accuracy, simplifying complex information without losing meaning and creating a platform that is both easy to use and culturally adaptable for different regions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Developed a specialized health chatbot tailored to gestational diabetes (unlike general health bots). Integrated a RAG framework to ensure information accuracy and safety. Created a working demo that shows how AI can empower pregnant women. Sparked interest from healthcare stakeholders and potential partners in maternal health.

What we learned

In building this project, we learned how powerful AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) frameworks can be when applied to healthcare, but also how important it is to ground responses in verified medical literature for safety and trust.

What's next for Digital GDM Screen

Pilot testing with local maternal health clinics. Expanding the knowledge base to include multiple languages and cultural contexts. Partnerships with healthcare providers and maternal health organizations. Scaling the framework to cover other health conditions beyond gestational diabetes.
