Inspiration
Digital payments and online transactions have become a major part of everyday life. At the same time, fraudulent transactions can happen through unusual transaction patterns, unfamiliar devices, unexpected locations, repeated failed attempts, and abnormal transaction amounts.
We were inspired to build Digital Fraud Detection to explore how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning can help identify suspicious transactions at an early stage and provide understandable risk information instead of simply giving a binary fraud or legitimate result.
What the project does
Digital Fraud Detection is an AI-powered fraud monitoring system designed to analyze transaction-related information and estimate the risk of fraudulent activity.
The system considers factors such as:
- Transaction amount
- Transaction frequency
- Account age
- Device information
- Location
- Payment method
- Transaction timing
- Previous fraud history
- Failed transaction attempts
The system processes these features through a machine-learning pipeline and produces a fraud probability, risk level, and explainable risk factors.
The goal is to help users understand why a transaction may be considered suspicious and support faster investigation of high-risk transactions.
How we built it
The application is designed using a full-stack architecture:
Frontend: React.js, Vite, React Router, Axios and modern CSS
Backend: Node.js, Express.js and REST APIs
Database: MongoDB with Mongoose
Machine Learning: Python, Pandas, NumPy and Scikit-learn
The frontend provides the dashboard, transaction analysis interface, transaction history, alerts and analytics.
The Node.js backend manages authentication, transaction processing, database operations and communication with the machine-learning service.
The ML service preprocesses transaction data, performs prediction using a trained classification model, and returns the fraud probability and risk information to the application.
The system is structured as:
"Transaction Input → Data Preprocessing → ML Model → Fraud Probability → Risk Classification → Explainable Alert"
Authentication and application security are handled using JWT-based authentication, password hashing, input validation, protected routes and environment-based configuration.
What we learned
Through this project, we explored how machine learning can be integrated into a real-world web application rather than being used only as an isolated prediction model.
We focused on connecting a machine-learning pipeline with a full-stack application, designing REST APIs, handling transaction data, presenting risk information through dashboards, and making AI predictions more understandable to users.
We also learned the importance of treating security, validation, explainability and user experience as essential parts of an AI-based financial application.
Challenges we faced
One of the main challenges was designing a system that combines a web application, database and machine-learning service while keeping the components properly connected.
Another challenge was deciding which transaction attributes should be considered during fraud analysis and how they should be processed before prediction.
We also focused on avoiding misleading AI results. Model performance should be evaluated using actual test data rather than presenting fabricated accuracy or performance numbers.
Future Scope
The project can be extended with real-time transaction monitoring, streaming transaction data, more advanced anomaly-detection techniques, improved explainable AI methods, continuous model retraining, device fingerprinting, and integration with banking or payment platforms.
The long-term goal is to develop a practical fraud-monitoring system that can identify suspicious transaction patterns quickly while reducing unnecessary false alerts.
