What Inspired Me
The inspiration behind iCast stems from the lack of ability to customize my physical space with digital art and visual delight. I wanted to have the power to seamlessly add art and digital creations from Black and Brown artists, curated to an audio backdrop that resonates with us, to create the ultimate vibe.
By merging immersive visual projections with culturally relevant music, the vision was to empower users to personalize and enhance their surroundings, turning any space into an artistic and expressive environment. This project is about bridging art, culture, and technology to offer an experience that reflects our communities and stories.Inspiration
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we've faced in the development is the lack of available engineers with AI experience who can fully grasp and execute the vision. The complexity of merging generative AI, machine learning, and GPU-accelerated image processing into a seamless user experience requires a unique skill set that is hard to find.
Additionally, we have encountered situations where engineers overpromise and underdeliver, leading to setbacks in project timelines and product performance.
How we built it
Our platform to date has been built to incorporate cutting-edge technologies to deliver immersive digital experiences with ease:
Network Module: A secure Ubuntu-based system ensures seamless communication between the iCast app and projection hardware over Wi-Fi.
Application: The React Native-based app provides an intuitive interface for image selection, object detection, and 3D color overlays, offering users a smooth, responsive experience.
Backend Infrastructure: Hosted on AWS EC2 with FASTAPI, it supports image processing and object detection using TensorFlow and PIL.
Object Detection & Color Overlay: Utilizing real-time object detection and precise color overlays enhance visual projection.
Generative AI for Content: AI-driven content adapts to user input and environments, creating dynamic, personalized projections.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Scene Creation & Projection: A mobile-first setup captures real-time images and projects them onto physical spaces with ease.
What we learned
I've learned that nothing is easy and nothing is guaranteed in the process of building innovative solutions. If something can go wrong, it most likely will. The journey has been filled with unexpected challenges, from technical setbacks to team dynamics. But these obstacles have also reinforced the importance of resilience, problem-solving, and remaining adaptable in the face of uncertainty. Through it all, I've gained invaluable insights into the complexities of bringing a vision to life.
What's next for Digital Dreamers
The next phase focuses on audio-visual transformation and the integration of real-device triangulation for more precise and dynamic projections. We aim to incorporate enhanced audio capabilities, allowing users to synchronize custom soundscapes with visual projections for a fully immersive experience. Additionally, we will further develop real-time triangulation using actual devices to ensure seamless and accurate projections in physical spaces. This evolution will allow the creation of even richer, more engaging environments, transforming how users interact with digital content in the real world.
