As civil engineering students, we noticed a common problem in construction projects: important work is often scattered across different tools. Quantity estimation is done separately, BOQs are prepared separately, costing is handled elsewhere, and engineering calculations are again done using different methods. This made us think: What if all these processes could be connected in one place? That idea became ConcreteIQ. We wanted to build something that follows the way a civil engineer actually works. A project starts with basic information, then moves into estimation, quantity takeoff, rate analysis, BOQ, costing, engineering, and finally reporting. Instead of entering the same information repeatedly, ConcreteIQ connects these stages. For example, when a concrete quantity is calculated for a beam, that same information can move into the Quantity Takeoff → BOQ → Cost Analysis → Report workflow. While building the project, we realized that the biggest challenge was not simply creating calculators. It was making different construction processes communicate with each other correctly while keeping the data accurate and project specific. We also faced practical challenges such as designing a professional construction-focused interface, making dropdowns and forms work properly inside modals, maintaining project context across different pages, and preventing duplicate BOQ data. Through this project, we learned how important data flow, validation, reusable components, and user experience are when developing engineering software. ConcreteIQ is our attempt to make everyday civil engineering work more connected, less repetitive, and easier to manage. Our vision is to continue developing it into a complete digital workspace for civil engineers and construction professionals.
