Inspiration The idea for Digital Bloom began with something simple and familiar. The distorting mirrors you see at fairs. We loved how those mirrors reshape your reflection, showing you a different version of yourself. We wanted to take that concept and give it a modern, artistic twist using artificial intelligence. Instead of bending your image with mirrors, we reimagine it through the styles of iconic painters, transforming your reflection into art.
Concept Digital Bloom is an interactive AI art installation that captures your photo and transforms it into artwork inspired by famous artists such as Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon. With a press of a button, the system takes a picture of you (or an object), uploads it to Google Gemini, and returns a completely reinterpreted image.
Development Process Our prototype uses a Raspberry Pi 4 connected to a 7-inch TFT display, a USB camera, a wireless keyboard, and the Google Gemini API. We created a virtual environment on the Raspberry Pi to test our API keys and integrate multimodal prompts for sending both images and text to Gemini. Using Python and OpenCV, we established a live camera feed, captured still images, and processed them through the AI to display the transformed result directly on screen.
Challenges One of our biggest challenges was getting the Raspberry Pi to communicate properly with the USB camera and ensuring the live feed worked seamlessly. Through testing and troubleshooting, we have grown an understanding of OpenCV and API integration.
Outcome Overall, we are extremely proud of how this project came out. Each generated image felt unique, funny, and full of personality. We’re proud of how Digital Bloom combines playfulness, technology, and art to create an experience that makes everyone a muse.
What’s Next Our next goal is to scale up Digital Bloom into a larger immersive installation. Imagine walking up to what looks like a digital mirror, having your photo taken, and instantly seeing yourself reimagined as a masterpiece. We want to make the experience 100 times bigger, inviting people to see themselves not just as subjects, but as art.
