Inspiration

When I was in high school in Uganda, I realized the only way to really excel was to have your own textbooks. Like many other students, I couldn't afford them, so I spent hours searching the internet just to download basic notes, this was very frustrating for me. I built DigiLearn because I want to make a world where no student has to struggle like I did just to access study materials they need to excell in studies.

What it does

DigiLearn is a platform that gives students across Uganda instant access to class notes, past papers for practice and research, while connecting them directly with top teachers and their textbooks in the country.

How we built it

I built the DigiLearn using React Native with Expo, doing all my coding in VS Code. For the UI design, I started in Figma, then took screenshots of the UI, and used ChatGPT-5.6 to generate a detailed text breakdown of the layouts and colors. I then fed those descriptions into Codex to help speed up the coding process

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was working through slow responses and long wait times with models like GPT-5.6 Terra medium, along with the high cost of AI subscriptions. Since I couldn't afford the paid plans, I had to get creative and stretch the free tiers of ChatGPT and other AI tools as much as possible every time they reset.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm really proud that I actually brought this idea to life as a self taught developer, despite my tight resources. Building a full React Native app from scratch and finding a clever workaround to design and code it using free AI tools is something I'm super proud of

What we learned

I learned that you don't need a big budget or expensive tools to build something meaningful. Honestly, you just need an idea and a passion to see it through, and you'll always find a way to figure the rest out.

What's next for DigiLearn App

Next up for DigiLearn, I want to take this beyond Uganda and make the app operational in many other African countries, so we can help students all across the continent access the resources they need to excel
